Refurbing 328i split rims - Help!

Hi all,

I'm slowly working my way round my car tidying the niggles, and after much deliberation, the wheels have got to be done (usual laquer peeling etc.)

Has anyone had theirs done and know of somewhere good to go? along with how much I'm going to be looking at. All the places I've found seem to want to charge an extortionate amount and won't touch the wheels unless I've dismantled them first.

I'm in kent so somewhere reasonably local would be useful but that said if it's worth the trip then I'll do it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

BBS are a mare to refurb due to the split-rim bit. Basically if they're split to refurb the lacquer will almost always crack on the rim when it's bolted back together again.

BJV appear to have got the hang of it, and have loads of happy customers on e36coupe

AFAIK, Lepsons subcontract all their BBS wheels to them...

Excellent link that I need to get mine done as some clot got them painted! and they look terrible now.

Just have to source a set of 'spare' wheels now...

Not only is he remarkably sound, he's also got plenty of OEM E36 wheels available - suggest you invest in some unloved E46 16" or 17" rims as winter spares to protect the BBS.

Interesting point on having a spare set to preserve the BBS, I've got a set of M3 contour alloys that came with the car with decent enough tyres on that I might now hang onto... although similar money to this for them would come in very handy... http://www.bmautosport.co.uk/detail.php?siteid=809 and to think I nearly sold them for £200...

If there the bbs split rims the 328i sport has spit and polish wont split them,Luckily mine where RE diamond cut and split before i bought the car,If i had to get them refurbed now id get the outer lip polished and centre powder coated.

I think I'd rather get the 15"s and use them for track days too - unless the 16"s can be had with cheaper tyre replacement

Rather spookily I've been keeping an eye on the nightmare that is Ebay, and remarkably I've just managed to catch myself a bargain:

5 x real BMW 328 Sport BBS wheels in what look excellent (albiet sprayed) condition for £132!

I'm well stoked, and even if they get used as spares while I get my originals refurbed, then they are a bargain.

However, I suspect that I may use them as permanent, and tidy up my ones as good as I can and I then have set of track day tyres

Just out of interest I've been watching those as well... purely as a comparison in terms of price for what I got mine for - £175 all with good tyres.. gotta love ebay when it works!

where you planning on getting yours done? i'm getting closer and closer to taking the plunge, but thinking I might as well order a couple of new tyres and get them added at same time... Marshal's were your recommendation weren't they?

Was very chuffed when I got them at that price

Once I'm ready to go for it, I'll probably get them done at BV, I think it was, as recommended above.

The Marshalls are great on the rears - seeing as they are cheaper, yet just as grippy. However I get a bit of a deal on 225/45/17 Michelin Pilot Sport II's so I get those on the front. However if I couldn't get them at the price I pay (120 fitted for two) then I'd just get two Marshalls on the front.

The best thing is, I have six 225/45/17 tyres in the garage (used P6000s, and a couple of odd ones) and I reckon these will be ideal to be plonked on for any 'smokey' track days I may come across (VMax )...

Have to say that's similar to what I'm thinking, going to get the tyres ordered first then take a trip up there with the whole lot. Can't see me finding better in terms of value for money...

Surely at £120 for two Pilot sports fitted you'd want them on the rear as well?

If they did 245/40/17 in that size: The deal is, the tyre place who I use, also do all of the wheel swaps for Honda - so basically Hondas come into the country with the wrong alloys on and this place splits down the tyres and alloys and obviously they then move them on.

However a few of these wheels are 'driven' on for a few (i.e off the transporter etc) and the tyres cannot be sold as new. This is where I get my 225/45/17 size from - its a very common size for the new Hondas, but unfortuatly they do not come in 245/40/17, a predominantly BMW sizing

And there you have why I can get 225/45/17's for £60 a piece fitted

alright for some! something tells me mine won't be quite so cheap. Although the marshal's do look worth a go if they're as good as you say...

only one way to find out i suppose... mytyres here i come..
