Dear Lord, have any of you come across one of these putting their foot down? Imagine the scenario, Boxster S (252bhp) pulls up at lights, doesn't see the Merc C Estate badge, assumes not even a race on because its not a C32/43 etc, pulls away slowly, Merc floors it and Boxster is left for dead until about 3rd gear 7000rpm! Next lights I get the bloke to wind down his window to tell him how fast his car is and lets go again.

So this time we have an equal footing and mine is only very slowly pulling away. I know that the latest gen diesels are superb, but the 0-60 times quoted for his Merc are 6.9, and 5.7 for mine. I couldn't believe it!

Has any one else come up against these incredible new diesels?

With the 997 in the garage, Porsche Assistance supplied me with a BMW 525d last weekend. It was the first diesel I'd driven since a Focus hire car about 3 years ago. They're quite nippy these days, aren't they? The only downside was it was an M sport one, which kind of goes against the q-car thing and gets the Corsa boys a bit agitated. (A lot more than the Porsche does in fact.)

I consider your experience a "difficult" Porsche moment hehe

Only thing I can say is, the torque delivered by Diesels (even a 2000 Golf 90bhp) is beyond me, these things pull away locomotive style, but die at 3000rpm... With the newest technologies including direct injection, high pressure, etc, I think we're about to see alot of Diesel supercars. Their advantages can't continue to be ignored.

Of course they rattle like a tractor and die at maximum 6000rpm. Would never own one myself I think.

I had a bit of a run in with a Quattroporte and a 993 Carrera S a while back, comfortably eased away from the 993 while the Quattroporte calmly eased away from me, I was in my 500E.

Now, on a similar road I saw a 535D floor it, telltale whiff of smoke and I put my foot down, I literally only eased past him and was getting away faster and faster.

The 535D is indeed a very nice car indeed, no shame there at all.

Dave!

That 6.9 second 0-60 time will be repeatable almost all day long in the Merc by just mashing the throttle and letting the autobox do the work whereas to get a 5.7 0-60 time with a manual Boxster will require some clutch/tyre abuse...

A mate of mine has a debadged V10 Touareg, which he regularly uses to scare the unwary - a great Q car.

My 'everyday' car is a BMW330D M-Sport Touring, which will go like the wind when prompted. It would give my 993TT a run for it's money up to legal speeds......of course I don't go any faster than that..wink What is impressive is the in-gear acceleration, given the fact that it's an auto box, and the average fuel consumption around town of 37mpg.

While we are on the subject of diesels, my everyday motor is an A4 2.0 TDI Sline, I'm looking at installing one of these plug and play "TUNIT" blocks (aparrantly plugs into the common rail diesel) has anyone on here had any experience of these on here?
Put a post on the Audi forum, but no response, not as chatty as us Pork boys!!
