Well, went to Powerhouse in Ashford to look at a 748s but sadly did not measure up to my last one, and can't face going from a mint '02 bike to a well used looking one...
Then I poped in to Motorline Ducati...big mistake. People there are seriously friendly and I was out test riding on a 999 before I could think twice. Jeeezus, what a difference a few extra cc makes. to say it was quick (and there was no way I was anywhere near ringing it's neck) is a huge understatement. It has the extra grunt I 'missed' on the 748 once I'd got used to it a little.
So, now I need a torquey 996/998/999 oh and the 1098 looks and feels stunning...now where did I put that spare 6 grand to go with my insurance payout?

You should try an Aprilia then. Duc performance with proper electrics Then I poped in to Motorline Ducati...big mistake. Go for it, you'd love a 996 or 998, 6 grand will get you a mint 996!
£6k will get you a new 2006 blade!!!You really have to love Ducati to spend £6k on an old shed of a 996.
Oh god, please don't chuck Aprilia into the equation. I'm having enough trouble trying to decide red 999 or black 999.
And then I start thinking, well for '06 999 money I could have a brand new black Gixer which was the other bike I fancied since my long term riding career began...
So many bikes, such limited cash/time.
I'm 6 foot and find the 999 quite comfy, but then I've only ever ridden 4 bikes. And then the new Monster S4R also looks quite appealing (and i'd get cash back from my ins co...)

Ducati , if you like tinkering and checking every bolt for tightness before a ride out , then the Duc is for you .
Like waiting for that smiling AA man , then again , the duc is for you.
Ducati , the bikers slowwwww TVR
Like going mega fast with no problems and ultimate reliability ? then buy a jap 4 .

Maybe I like getting there without having to carry a box of spanners.

Says it all really, another armchair expert

To be honest, apart from the first real ride out (returned in a recovery van - completely dead battery) and the recovery ride home after it went on a no rider trip up the road curtesy of 'Corsa man' it was extremely reliable in the 430 miles I did on it :-)
I've owned 2 Range Rovers, currently have a TVR and an Alfa, and can honestly say they have all had small niggly issues, but nothing that detracts massively from the pleasure of the ownership experience.
Problem is, I am drawn to things with character (which often translated to potentially unreliable)
Anyway I can't get quoted on the 999 on my current policy (or a 749 for that matter), so may have to go older, Monster or Jap...

Works of art are put on display bought by poncie gits, and laughed at by people who have real taste.

Well pardon me for having an opinion. Armchair expert? Thanks for the complement.
Nothing wrong with having anything Italian, if that's what floats your boat. What does say it all though, is people thinking they are something special and looking down their nose's at others as they perceive they have something better. (I'm talking about you)
So carry on with your little snipes, but expect a little ribbing back.
On runs out, I've had to stop and cable tie clock's back onto a 749, twice, follow one home hicking and farting between one and two cylinders.
Stuck at Rothbury with Twizellb's brother, on his 6 month old Edwards Rep, with a rusty clutch push rod, not able to get it into gear, then being told it would be a Six week wait for parts.
Paul's MV (a couple of lads from this site have met him) sat in the middle of the countryside with engine oil pouring out of the headers.
This year, having to keep stopping for a very good friend of mine on his new pride and joy. Guess what kind of bike? yea, 1098, engine management warning lights.
Stopped for someone who I didn't know on the way to East Fortune, who didn't have the cam belts going around the cams. Again, 1098.
I'm one of those people who likes to use my bikes, Regularly, without having to spend a King's ransom on regular servicing or preventive maintenance.
Character, is what I believe the Italian bikes have, or dare I say soul.
So, if you are happy with your lot, then good, I'm pleased for you.
John.
Calm down pet, I'm speaking from experience here.
In no particular order,
2001 CBR 600 camchain problem
1999 Hayabusa camchain tensioner and subframe recall
GSXR1000 fork coating came off
TL1000s frame cracked
CBR900 second gear broke
GSXR750 terrible gearbox whine
T509 Triumph worse finish than a B&Q BBQ, frame recall
These are bikes that I have personally owned.
Contrary to your belief I think you will find that Ducati owners are real enthusiasts willing to share information to anyone who needs it.
The bikes are not perfect and the ownership experience is different to japanese bikes, but do your research before buying and then make your decision.
Of course you are entitled to your own opinion, but as Clint says, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one

Sorry, I don't believe I've met Clint!
I am calm dear, it's only a Forum, no malice from me.
Arseholes and mouth's, sometimes it's hard to tell the difference.
I agree about what you've said about Ducati owners being enthusiasts, can't believe they would do it for fun. Sorry to hear about your bad luck with the Jap bikes, I must just be lucky with the ones I've had. Saying that had a recall for the TPS, to be replaced on mine.
Mate of mine with the 1098 is from Durham, Langley Castle area, if you see him at the side of the road, stop and say Hi.
