I need new front discs and pads for my '95 Chimaera. I have confirmed they are 240mm diameter discs not 260mm. After extensive web surfing I have also foundn that they seem to be various kinds of Sierra, notably the 1.3L '84-'87 amongst others.

What I would be interested to know from others are the following:

Which manufacturers are OK to buy from, I don't want discount parts, but equally I don't want to pay over the odds either.

I was all set to buy EBC discs and red stuff pads, as their website has a listing for my car ith the right pads and discs to use, albeit they say the 240mm discs are only used '93-'94. However I then read soem forums which suggested that red stuff pads were not good cold,I also read some that said this was just the old ones and the new ones are fine cold. The full set for the front was goign to ste me back £70.

I then looked on BuyPartsBy and looks like the whole set would cost me £25 from here and I think they are Mintex from the part number. I think these are OK?

I am tempted by the EBC range, as the braking on 240mm discs could be better really, I guess why TVR switchde to 260 after a while, but I am concerned about throwing the front rear balance out and also going through a hedge (or worse) first thing on a cold winter morning.

Sorry to ramble but can any body out there offer any gems of wisdom!!!!!!!!!

When I had my Chim I put Tarox grooved on all round with their pads too, there was a noticeable improvement over standard.

My car is a was registered late 95 and that had 240mm fitted as standard(my brother as a chim reg around the same time but as the later frontsnutssupply & stock problems i guess),dont worry about the brake balance it will be better with the bigger fronts not worse, depends what how hard you drive to if you can justify bigger fronts.

Thanks Simon & Kevin,

I was going to keep the 240mm discs, but was considering upgrading to redstuff pads. It doesn't sound like either of you have any concerns over brake balance. After sleeping on it I came to the conclusion that making the back brakes too good could cause the rear to lock up, but making the front brakes better couldn't have too much a of a detrimental effect.

I have AP front brake upgrades, the rears are not significantly enhanced and the brake balance is not compromised. You can enhance the fronts significantly without touching the rears IMHO.

Front brakes do about %80 of the braking so just up grading the fronts should not be a problem at all, and you were right, i didn't have any brake balance problems due to the up grade.

If you're staying with 240mm discs I have a new set of drilled/grooved discs that I won't need and a new set of pads as well - if interested give me an email.
