Today my milometer packed in at exactly 30,000.... the trip did exactly the same. I'd prefer to get my hands dirty, so any ideas what to look for? (If it's a dash out thing, time for the replacement)!

TADTS, wink
Give it a thump on the bezel with the side of your hand (Not on the glass !!)
While your moving.
They are know to stick when rolling over from ??,999 to ??,000.
One time mine was stuck for three weeks.

Mine stopped. I just took the car out for a blast. Started working again. Definately worth bumping / tapping it before further investigation!

Indeed, sir, they all do that. Ours failed at every '9999 and some '999s until finally at 49,999 it failed never to work again. We now have an 'S' plate Chimaera that has done 2500 miles. hehe

The intermediate failures were fixed by

  • reversing violently
  • tapping the glass whilst going along
  • tapping the glass whilst reversing violently
  • having the Mrs tap the glass whilst going along
  • having the Mrs tap the glass whilst reversing violently
  • the sound vibrations of the Mrs berating me for the reversing manouevre - no more glass tapping
  • taking a ferry journey from Cork to Swansea (don't ask me)

Is Mrs Don available for a bit of reversing and tapping?

Not so keen on the ferry trip though.

Mine has packed in on a random number, does that mean that it is probably dead and worthless attempting 'being violent'??

Cheers

It probably means that it isn't the usual "sticky" mechanism problem. More likely the sensor is disconnected or something. No need to try the reversing and tapping procedure...

Mine recently stuck at 39999. All the tapping in the world didn't help mine, but rapidly pressing the tripmeter button did!

Could be the transducer - but this would also take out your speedometer as well - if it still shows how fast your going then it won't be the transducer but rather the milometer itself

Mine stuck on 19999 coming back from Lemans on Monday. I tapped the clock a few times while driving along and it moved on to 20000 and then carried on working.

Mine stopped on precisely 30k on the way up to Aberdeen. Following month took it to Cadwell for VSCC meet. Booked it in before old man took it to France for that and a minor service and it started on drive down to Fernhurst. Net result 1k miles not on speedo and a further 1k miles on my limited mileage policy. So my advice would be to ignore all of this tapping nonsense and leave it until it decides to work again.... (Just call me Bent Bob!)

Ha ha! Well I decided that I would be honest (besides, like I need an excuse to drive it!).

So, after a few miles of tapping and prodding, it's now working again. Hurrah!

Cheers all - you lot are brilliant.

Now, does anyone want to supply and fit a free full supercharger kit for me?

Thought mine was unique when it stuck at 9999, should have realised it was a common problem!

Did Stockport to Blackpool return and only did 3 miles - p**s poor mpg mind you!! laugh

Re-setting the tripometer solved it.

mine had a little 'rest' at 49999. Some good advice i was given was to ignore it as TVR's hate to be ignored and it'll soon start working again.

Hey presto that evening after around 25 mile run all was working again..biggrin
