The reason I ask is that I was heading towards London on the M3 yesterday afternoon. Saw a white "transit type" van on the bridge ahead. Looked like a mini bus so I didn't adjust my speed. As I got close to it I noticed that it had mirrored windows and a id code on the side - looked official rather than a day out a Legoland. Cheers

Everything you need to know here, there are many different flavours:

Van on bridge = slow down! I've ended up slowing down for ones that end up being works vans etc but better safe then sorry IMO.

yes There was a guy with something on a tripod sat outside an A-class merc on the cat and fiddle road in the layby usually used by the camera van. He was causing lots of panic braking, as I went past I noticed that it was an SLR camera on the tripod and he was simply taking pictures of the exotic bikes that frequent that road. The government has got us soo wound up that anything that looks like it might catch us results in pavlovian panic behaviour clap well done the SCPs! rolleyes

One of the bridges just outside the M25 roadworks on the M3 is a favourite ANPR stop.

Usual giveaway is a boatload of plod just afterwards.

Exactly.

If an ANPR camera van detects a vehicle with an ‘issue’ it will, alomost certainly, be pulled over as soon as practical by real police officers. No arguing about who was driving and the offence explained there and then.
Proper Road Traffic Policing IMHO.

Where as if you commit the heinous crime of speeding past a speed camera, the operator, having zapped you, will be so incensed at you disregard for the law that he will....

…carry on zapping more vehicles until the end of his shift when he will then trundle back to base where the evidence will be processed in the next day or so, and a letter send out to the vehicle keeper demanding to be informed of who was driving.
Road Traffic Policing by statistics and on the cheap IMHO.

ANPR may be used for good at the moment, but it is evil and insidious.

The whole sorry mess needs nuked.
