I was told today that changing synthetic oils before manufacturers recommended intervals will do more damage than good, is there any truth in this?

Engine in question is an 1800 Zetec engine.

Quite likely. I worked for a small car company in the early '90s when synthetics were becoming popular and we went over to Mobil 1 as "first fill" only to find a load of engines burning oil. At the time, Mobil told us to use their ordinary mineral oil for the first 1000 miles to let the rings bed into the bores properly and THEN go over to Mobil 1. I don't know if engine design or oil formulation has changed much since then though!
