Cat C & D means bad and worse! If you do a search on here I think there was a thread explaining the criteria in the last month or so.

£15k should be okay for a 98/99 4.5 Cerb - get in contact with Oli_Quick he's selling one at that kind of price.

In some cases very little damage can result in a car being classified as a Category C or D and the repairs may be perfect BUT there is always a stigma attached to such cars - may reduce their value by 30% to 50%.

I thought (mistakenly?) that C & D where sort of bad & not quite as bad? (Assuming a complete mess/stick it in the grinder would be Cat A? Or is it t'other way round?)

My BMW motorbike has just aquired CAT D status, thanks to being rear ended and it broke the rear light lens and scuffed the on e side V lightly. Not much more than a car park drop, but to replace all the parts as to new condition they decided to write it off and i kept it. Suited me v nicey as i've done ok out of it. But the bike was still sound and a mate has bought it, but he knew the full story. But the scale goes Cat D light damage to Cat A hit by a Scud missile.

Category A: Beyond repair vehicle must be crushed
Category B: vehicles body must be crushed, may be used for supplying some replacement parts
Category C: vehicle has been extensively damaged and repaired
Category D: Vehicle has been damaged, insurer decided not to repair

You're right, should have said D & C bad and worse, Fubes.

Many people find Cat D acceptable but the cost of repair has to be more than 50% of the value of the car for the insurance co to write it off (I think) - that's a minimum £7500 repair in most cases, not sure I'd like to buy one that had that kind of 'injury' unless the seller was completely upfront and honest, perhaps with photography of the work thereafter - all imho.

VOSA or DVLA website can explain, but CAT C requires a vehicle check (to prevent fraud and ringing) and Cat D does not. Also If you have the reg number the VOSA helpline will tell you over the phone if your car has either and is FREE too.

I phoned up before buying my £40 Cavalier and it had not been recorded either. The guy that owned it had been involved in an accident and the 3rd party insurance company had paid him the value of car and told him to keep it to save them having to pay for a hire car. (It had a dented door)

Personally I would have been happy with a Cat D for £40 but Cat C would have been a pain if not already checked.

Cat D in most TVR cases is cosmetic work (little fibreglass repair and respray) 50% rule is also not the case, I know of cars with little other than a rear end shunt (with less than a grands worth of glass work/ £3k full respray needed) that have been written off before they've even been run in...

Dont worry, the example car has been put back on the road a little while later and sold to an enthusiast who couldnt have otherwise afforded it at the time. Seven years on/70k miles hes still extremely happy with it, driving it to work then hillclimbing/sprinting it most weekends with an occaisional trackday thrown in. wink
