'S' Reg 318 Touring Aircon

The missus is away which means I'm having to be family taxi driver using her car.
The first few days were spent discovering niggles which, my children informed me, had been that way for ages. Let's not go down the 'why didn't she mention it?' route, suffice to say I'm mildly peeved.
The main one is the aircon and I know I'll probably need to get it looked at but before I do I thought I'd ask if there are any 'known' faults (coming from the TVR world I'm well used to the concept).
Selecting any stage of fan seems to provide little more than a gnat's fart of breeze. When I push the chilly button '*' I hear the compressor switch on, there's lots of noise behind the dash but little from the vents, nothing in fact.
If I leave the aircon on and drive 'at speed' there is a barely discernable trickle of what might be cooler air but then again might be my optimism. Certainly not enough to make any difference in the cabin.
Gas pressure checked and ok.
In my limited experienced I suspect a blocked duct, closed valve or something similar as it's making all the noises but nothing's coming out.

Nope, its your Final Stage Resistor - basically this fails and you don't get any fans working at all. I replaced mine with the pattern part from GSF (but can't remember the part number - but they'll know - generic part for all BMWs I think) for about £50. Easy to fit - just follow the instructions from the link in my thread I posted last week: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

And that is such a fun job. The first time you do it you'll wish you had been born with 3 arms that are twice the length of your current 2 and that you were a contorsionist. Console yourself with the fact that every time you do it after that it is much easier.Denis O said:
