S3 mystery switch
Discussion
It's nothing to do with the alarm I know that much. Could be something to do with the immobilser I suppose. Unfortuneatly it doesn't make the car go any quicker when I twiddle it. Said car has gone for a service today and good look over (only had it a week) so I can't twiddle the knob now until I get it back to find out if any of your suggestions work.
Might not want it back if it turns out to be a right banger

I'll give the knob a twiddle when I get the motor back tomorrow. I only asked as I couldn't find said knob in the instrutions manual and maybe thought it was for the ejector seat or something.
Now boys, I've been hooning about in the sensible car today (new 1.4 polo tdi) and forgot just what great fun it is, and how quick. Me thinks it could probably do 0-60 quicker than my S3, in fact I think it will. Now either I've got a damn fast polo or I'm just not pushing the S3 hard enough.

You might have a switch for a radiator fan over-ride... it should just be a on/off afair but as it is an owner-fitted item any switch to hand may have been used. unless you know its not that, with the engine off but ignition on and the bonnet up, switch the switch and see if your fan comes on or not...

The bonnet catches require attention. Damn things dont spring back and I have to coax them out with a screwdriver otherwise the bonnet doesn't latch down properly as I found out the other day whilst driving along and the bonnet popped up to say high when I went over a bump. Luckily I was only dawdling along and not far from a garage for assistance.
It's got a clean bill of health lads. Just needs some TLC but it's a solid car underneath which is the main thing. So it's got the

Now, as to what exactly this mystery switch does?

Now, as to what exactly this mystery switch does?It sounds as if you need to adjust the bonnet catches; you can slacken the nut on the top and move the male bit round in the bracket to get it in the right place for the body/female bit .. all sounds a bit kinky ...
Re the rotary switch - on mine its the panel dimmer and its basically off or low although the gauges light better than the speedo etc!

My understanding is that the bonnet catch issue is with the bit on the body, not the bonnet itself ?Jim
Maz right or wrong ?
Chris
Absolutely correct Chris, it's the body side of things not the bonnet itself. They've got loads of grease on them, but they just dont return on their own, takes a little persausion with a screwdriver until they pop forward. And yes the guy at the garage has had a fiddle but to no avail.
As for male/female bits, nuts and all that kinky talk, I'm an
been single for way too long and have no idea what you're on about. Thought you guys were too serious on this forum anyway and that stuff was reserved for those of us that frequent the Pie & Piston forum.
Mystery Switch, absolutely correct again Chris and anyone else who suggested it, it's the dimmer switch for the dash light. Problem solved.
Guess I need to find something else to quiz you boys with now. Anyone got any hints for stopping pigeons from sitting outside my bedroom window and cooing at 5am every morning.

You need some pigeon spikes - I had the same problem.
They stick on the ledge so the pigeons can't land there - assuming you have a ledge and they aren't just sitting on the roof.
You need a man with a big, er, ladder to put them up though.
Sorry this just turned into a pigeon discussion forum.
Little buggers sh!t on your car aswell.

When you open the bonnet, make sure you return the lever under the dash to the shut or forward position. The 'sliders' in the body housings do/can stick (particularly if the aforementioned lever isn't returned to the shut position!!!).
I've found that a sharp but light tap with a toffee hammer makes them spring back. You can remove them via the footwell - couple of 13 mm bolts - and oil the mechanism....but plenty of grazed/fibreglassed knuckles/wrists. I keep them oiled and so far have not had any recent sticking problems.
