I am contemplating doing this mod and wondered if people could give me some feedback on it. I quiet like the idea of having something between fans off and a jet turbine noise. Has anyone got any negative comments on it?
It looks easy enough to do (from the Chimaerapages) so seems like a good first project on my Chim
I have a '98 500.

Thanks in advance.

Two stage cooling is a "plug and play " mod
Excellent service from David Beer
Now very confident about using the car in traffic
For a little extra David will supply a variation which allows the fans to run with the ignition off. Auseful feature that should be standard!

Two stage cooling is a excellent mod, easy to fit in a few minutes and peace of mind in traffic, it works really well and is fully adjustable. Fully recommend fitting it.

Just fitted this to mine a couple of weeks ago. I went for the "run after switch off" option, which was reasonably straight forward to fit, although getting the live connection on to the starter motor did pose a challenge.

I'm still experimenting with the activation temperatures, but it definately does what it is supposed to smile

ETA.
Where abouts in Hants are you? I'd be happy for you to come over and use my inspection pit if you want a hand.

Thanks for the replies, I was thinking about the extra mod where the fans run after the ignition is off but why would you want this if the engine isn't running? OK it might be hot but its not going to get any hotter. There must be something I'm missing wink

E2DJH, I'm near Winchester (near Marwell zoo actually) so it's a fair way to Berkshire, I'll bear it in mind thought thanks.

When you fit this, as I expect you will as it's an excellent product you will find David's instructions suggest different places for fitting the temperature control box.

I have fitted mine on the top of the radiator surround where they are easy to reach and there is enough clearance for the bonnet. Simply fitted with two "adequate" cable ties.

This is the most convenient place I have seen the controls fitted and it looks neat too. If you want a picture let me know.

Peter.

A pic would be great thanks, in the Chimaerapages guide it is fitted to the chassis and I was wondering if this is the most sensible place.
Cheers,

I looked at that chassis picture and thought there must be another option.

On top of the radoator and off to one side works well. I'll take a picture this evening and either e-mail it to you or work out how to post it here.

Stops heat soak, meaning just because you have switched off does not mean the underbonnet temperature is dropping in fact the exact opposite, leaving the fans running that little bit longer removes this harmful heat and prolongs the life off all the bits and pieces under the bonnet(a little, granted)most late cars do this for that very reason, one advantage is it would prolong the life of the starter, alternator etc.

Good points, is there much more fitting involved in the extra?

I would'nt call 80's Maestros 'late' cars... Simple capacitor to hold up the fan switch (at relay) for @5 minutes after ignition is cut IIRC.

Does anyone have instructions/pics on how you've fitted this? I got the option when I bought the kit last year and still haven't got around to fitting it paperbag

Cheers

It was an integral part of the kit that i got.
The only connections i had to make were two to the otter switch, the two connectors to each fan and the power lead to the positive terminal of the starter motor. The instructions did not include information about the "secret switch", but David did rush the job out for me, so a quick phone call resolved this. It allows for 3 options after switch off
i) Nothing
ii) Just teh half speed fan
iii) Full speed followed by half speed.
