Anybody experienced their crank pulley/vibration damper parting company with the end of the crankshaft ?
Or the retaining bolt coming out/loose.
This may only affect the serpentine engine, in particular the 5 litre.

Yes, they have to be done up to a very high torque, too low and it can work its way loose but overdo it and the bolt can fail.

Pete, i have spoken to TVR Power about this problem and they do not use the Landrover bolt, nor their torque setting of 180/200lb/ft.But some other bolt and 140lb/ft. Yes i know it is less but why ?
You may have seen the Crimson coloured Chimaera 500 owned by a German club member last year at Zolder. On the back of a tow truck at the hotel with the result of this problem.
I know of 2 other cars that this has happened to as well as one i am fixing at the moment.

It's very hard achieving the required torque setting so most people only seem to do it at about 100lb/ft. After that the engine starts to turn as it's hard to lock it all up.

Belt'n'braces: "Upgrade" starter motor with a tyre lever and jam flywheel.

Proper: "Have an assistant remove starter motor, and lock the flywheel through the aperture"

I wish I always had that assistant!

Yes that's the problem. Most people are on their own, jamming starters or chocking the wheels etc which is why they rarely get tightened to the correct torque .
