wiper motor - where to get one?
Discussion
You will find that the lucas unit are special to TVR...the 29 watt motor has been almost obsolete, the dealer price quoted is a bargin. I have spent 8 months getting the original manufacturer to re-make armatures/brush plates and gears along with all the internal plastic parts that fail when the park switch which is designed for the 14 watt motor fails and the unit overheats and melts everything. The last 2 secondhand units sold on Ebay this week for 200.00. The OE suppliers will not make the gearbox casing/cover/conrod so the unit will either old stock or remanufactured.

Yes, I am the seller on Ebay.
Munky...I am looking for units to build up stock of core units. IF the dealer price is an outright purchase then I would consider purchasing your old unit.
Edited to say the later 2000ish on unit sited under the dash is available from bosch.

Well in the world of TVR nothing is ever simple it seems!
Firstly it's not for me, it's for a mate of a guy at work. Spoke to the dealer earlier who now says (having checked with his parts bloke) that there are indeed 2 types of motor - Lucas and Bosch. The former is no longer made, but the latter is freely available. So the price I was given was for the Bosch motor. The way to check is allegedly to look under the bonnet - if you can see the motor it's Lucas, if you can't see it then it's under the dash and it's Bosch. So my colleague's mate is going to have to have a poke around and hope that he can't see a motor..

There in lies the ....The Lucas unit is passenger side engine bay at the windows lowest point (part of it's failings is that in every other lucas application their units are in the cabin or under a cover protected from water) just out of sight from outside the car,the bosch unit is fitted to the pedal box. The crossover point is mid 2000.

thanks for the info.. he says it's a 1998 R reg Chim, so is it likely to have the Lucas unit?Adrian@
That is correct...the next stage is work through a process of checks and testing the motor/wiper system, and switchgear to check that the motor is the fault (search and read through the threads, check through previous bills and see if the park switch if failing every year, perhaps remove the rack and check that the pinions are not seizing).

Is it easy to bench test those earlier motors?
Hi Wyn As such no, when stripped there is such a thing as a 'growler' that tests the armature, all the rest is visual or automatic exchange. Root cause is rusting of the amature, bits of rust getting stuck between the magnets and the armature ending in seizure next to fail is the winding by over heating, and shorting, then the conduction of the heat into the plastic bearings that limit the end float, then heat melting the main gear. Park switches failing are the symptom, as they are 14 watt units (being used in a 29 watt motor) the points burn as the unit overloads.

Appreciate the reply
To simply bench test a motor so see if it still has all functions would just be a case of powering it up no?
I know when doing so it would be unloaded as such, but it would prove if it still functions or not.
Have you/ anyone got a wiring/ plug diagram you could share ?
Btw, is the motor not the same as used in the early 80’s XJ6’s?

The XJ unit has different wipe degrees, gear, armature and parking system....it's a TVR special, 2 different gear units. exchange remanufactured unit only. Adrian@ I have spent 8 months getting parts remade for these units from the OE and they now point enquirys to me.
Adrian@
I have a test bed, I cannot do graphics but if you do a search the wiring has been posted before.....note that I have just had made the 29 watt brush sets made as the only unit available were 14 watt versions.

Sounds like it would be easier to convert to the later arrangement for the costs you are quoting.... As well as getting the thing under cover into the bargain
Dave
That would mean a new pedal box, different rack tube system, and wiring to suit. Where as the remanufactured unit now gets internal protection to help stop it failing again, replaced in 5-7 minutes, AND ,that motor is 133.00 plus conversion.

Trivial things like that didn't stop a lot of us getting rid of those troublesome wing mirrors
(sounds like even Joos bit the bullet now
) IMHO its a bit of a b@stard design and I would certainly consider an alternative solution when the crunch comes
Dave
With the wing mirrors you are refering to the VW conversion to what in effect was factory fitted later and reflects on how other people look at the car (worth spending money on). Wipers!...I have come to the conclusion that there very little wrong with the design, maybe the site at the base of the screen doe not help, BUT with the youngest unit being 7 years old and owners being told that the park switch is a the weak link, WHERE AS it is the sympton of the motor drawing too much current, again it does not help that the park switch is designed to park the 14 watt unit. Mere mortals need to know that there is a replacement remanufactured units out there and not secondhand units at the same price. Adrian@
