996 GT3 MkII - Buzzing or Rattle behind steering/dashboard?
Discussion
I have had an intermitent buzzing coming from behind what seems like my dials and steering wheel area of the dashboard, which today has turned into a constant noise!
It sounds like a loose screw or speedo cable buzzing, nothing major, but it is really annoying the hell out of me and I was wondering if anyone has come across anything similar on their GT3?
Thanks in advance!

It seems to be worse on windy days?
edit: happens 50% of the time and only above 80mph

I had something very similar to this when I bought 996TT a couple of months back. Sounded like an angry wasp at highish speeds. Turned out to be the windscreen seal.
Luckily, I was able to contact the previous owner who told me it started happening ever since he had the windscreen replaced at OPC. He took it back to them, but because it only happened at speeds >70MPH there was nothing they could do.
A top bloke called Ian from RAC Autoglass in Middlesbrough sorted it for me. He masking-taped up the windscreen seal first of all - the car looked a bit crappy, but it proved the point - the noise was no more. He took it back and worked around the seal and found a 6-inch section that was easy to move with his fingers. He squirted some bond down there and taped it back up. I drove home slowly and I left it until the next morning to make sure it had fully cured. Job done!
The movement was hardly anything, but I guess at speed the force is enough to flap the seal about causing the noise.
I would have sworn it was coming from the dash - the noise can be very deceiving!

brilliant - so glad you posted this boony, I'm sure this is the problem I have too. I'll suggest to my indie.Luckily, I was able to contact the previous owner who told me it started happening ever since he had the windscreen replaced at OPC. It seems like a common problem then.
To be honest, you could do the masking tape test yourself for a couple of quid rather than waiting for the indy.
Ian went right around the windscreen seal with it - he also initially taped up the gaps between wings/bonnet/bumper because he was convinced it was wind rushing through there hitting the plastic cowling (around windscreen wipers). Once he found the noise had stopped, he removed the tape around those gaps leaving it just on the seal to prove beyond doubt that was the problem area.
He did this all FOC too - said he couldn't guarantee a fix so wouldn't take any money. Top bloke. I gave him £20 the next day once we knew the problem was solved so everyone won!
Hope you all get yours sorted - it really is annoying and spoils the car IMO.
