Got an emergency phone call just now, a client of mine has a web site and are doing something with a client of theirs which involves clicks onto their site and some method of data capture, needs to be ready early in the day... tomorrow. Being in IT, I got no notice whatsoever hehe

Its automotive stuff, related to one of the PH track day events driving

Need to get a data capture solution sorted out tomorrow, but I'm not sure I have the manpower to guarantee delivery, as I have no idea yet what is involved. Its 6:05pm already, I'm leaving for the day in 30 minutes, and I dont even have a specification yet irked

To be fair, I dont know if its thirty minutes or three hours worth of work, as I have no information yet... I do get the impression though, that its not a big job, and would be very keen/grateful to have an extra helping hand available to assist, if needed; Someone who will be about all day, by a phone or checking emails regularly.

If anyone can spare the time and has decent general coding ability, drop me an email with your landline, mobile and email details - you have my thanks in advance.

Why do people do this in business? It isn't just an IT thing. Whether it's in finance or marketing, same thing. People want something yesterday.

Contrast this with the B2C front. Tell the Dixons guy that you want your new fridge freezer delivered in 2 hours when you're at home and he'll tell his colleagues and they'll all point and laugh at you in unison. Tell a brickie you need a new extension built by Monday (it's Friday today) and that you have no plan available yet ("I hope to have that by Sunday afternoon.&quotwink and they'll tell you to piss off.

A good point smile Trouble is, when you deliver (like we always somehow manage to do, this time thanks to Timsta!) the client's false belief that you are God-like and that nothing is ever a problem is only nurtured further, increasing the chances that you'll be given less notice next time round hehe

hehe mmm, that's why it's best to overquote the time it would take and deliver slightly shorter, even if you finished the project weeks ago. biggrin

Although, that is just not professional. The way big consultancies do it is to quote an amazingly impressive timescale and a cheap price. And then let the client down on both fronts. No, that would happen in the real world...

Wait a second, isn't this what those dodgy tradesmen do when ripping off old people eg fixing tiles... they quote £40 but then after starting the work, it becomes £1500. Sounds a bit like the sort of thing certain blue chip consultancies do... and they send in their graduate trainees. At least with those con artists you get unemployed semi-skilled tradesmen who vaguely know what they're doing. biggrin

We work with fixed prices, so the client knows exactly what the project will cost them. Its not always easy working that way as you usually give clients more than they paid for, but at least every client is left happy in that respect = more word of mouth business. Id be happy charging £5 per hour, on occassion we'd make enough money from a smallish project to buy a new house hehewink
