Day of Champions 2007!
Discussion
Wow. What a fscking day! Where do I begin?
First of all, the ride-in to the track was incredible. The organisation of it was superb, with all roundabouts cordoned off by the police to give us a clear run to the track. An amazing sight to see 100+ bikes in convoy.
The paddock and pitlane access was great and managed to get the back of my leathers signed by Ant West, Randy de Puniet, Colin Edwards, Carlos Checa, Nicky Hayden and John Hopkins. I spent ages trying to track down Stoner to get him to sign it but he was nowhere to be found and I was a bit gutted about that.
When Hayden was signing my back, there was a micro-conversation:
NH: "So you rode in today, yeah?"
ML: "Yeah, weather was good for it, too!"
NH: "What do you ride?"
(and bear in mind this was at the Repsol garage with a huge crowd of fans there)
ML: *silence* *cough* "Suzuki"
(insert much booing from the crowd and much laughter from Hayden and the Repsol team
)
At 4pm it was the charity auction and last year I managed to win one of Stoner's helmets for £750. This year the bidding seemed a bit softer, until Rossi came on and most of his stuff went for silly amounts - including the chance to have your photo taken with Rossi, the photo then turned into an oil painting which Rossi will sign to you: that went for £6k.
Stoner came on stage after Rossi to auction off his stuff and was booed by a fair few Rossi fans which was just
ing disgraceful and Randy and the other presenters were clearly quite embarrassed by it.
First lot from Stoner were the gloves he was wearing when he won at Shanghai. I managed to bag those for myself for a not-entirely-bad £350. He then auctioned off one of his helmets which went for a whopping £2,000. The final lot from him was the same as Rossi's: have your photos taken with him and then turned into an oil painting blah blah blah. Well I erm, won that for only £600.
Meeting your heroes is a
ing weird experience. I was taken backstage, met Casey and had a few photos taken with him, lots of handshaking, conversation about bikes and so on. I also took the opportunity, before he ran off, to force him to sign my leathers
I told him he'd better damn well win on Sunday, followed by more vigorous handshaking and then I had the wonderful pleasure of actually having to pay for it
I'm still recovering from it and can't actually believe I've met him and stuff. Will post some photos when I get back on Sunday night

Funnily enough, the gloves are Astars GP Pro in red/white size small. My own ones are the same but size medium... and his fit me better! Like
am I going to actually use them, though
And yes, sadly I'm in the Holiday Inn all weekend.
Yeah, S'pose!!
