MCN has an article today that in summary says Nottingham are scrapping their Traffic division and are set to rely on cameras for enforcement !!!! Oh dear I think I will leave it there and throw this one up for debate

Nottingham constabulary have been completely useless for years (How's that for a nice, uncontroversial statement ) A particular speciality seems to be pulling over anything decent and/or on two wheels, grilling the driver and wasting everybody's time for twenty minutes and if you want anything done about your car being nicked forget it (even with a GPS Tracker.) They even managed to give my insurers an invalid crime number. At least cameras are unbiased. To be fair the cameras in Notts. are generally well signed and the IR illuminated CCTV cameras on the ring-road are fairly obvious.

1) Any speeding infringement punished automatically (ACPO guidlines: fine&3 points for 35mph in a 30 !!!) so no one ever stopped and questioned.
2) No on the streets presence to discourage morons, thieves & assorted pond life.
3) Software (presumably) recognition of dodgy plates and automated letters from the DVLA
So if you want to steal my car, wait 'til it's parked in Nottingham, stick on fake plates and drive within the speed limit.
Surely this barmy notion will also result in a reduction in the total number of police so even those who do do their jobs properly (hi, to both of you) will be even more overworked.
I'm so _steaming angry_ about this I think I'll have to go to a certain road in central Nottingham which hasn't got any Gatsos and drive up and down at 150mph !!!

Well Nottingham was one of the first to use average cameras so this big brother attitude was bound to occur. Everybodies right of course, this allows real criminals to get on with it whilst the motorist gets crippled. What a stupid idea.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I really hope MCN has got it wrong...

False plates or stolen cars all round then is it?

Most dangerous driving occurs during work/school commuting time, at about 25-35mph anyway as far as I can see.

150mph up the A60 through Sherwood Jaydee? Just tell me in advance so I can get out of the way...

(BTW not a dark blue soft top Porsche is it?)

Who said anything about the A60 through Sherwood filmidget ? Anyway I was only joking (probably.)
And no, it's a silver hardtop. Even I'm not quite enough of an insufferable poseur to buy a droptop Porsche !

I'm really not sure about this story. They mention that Essex closed their traffic dept but I can find no evidence of that. Anyone know any better?

Rather than pointlessly fume about this I decided to give Notts. police a ring. They deny that traffic patrols are being reduced or suspended. They have, however, suspended plans to increase the number of SPECs. In addition, last night I saw a couple of police BMW 5 series touring on new plates with cones and cameras in the boot driving on the A60. Hard to imagine that they're shelling out £30k+ a throw if the service is to be cut.
I suspect the story arises from a recent review of the Notts police service.

PetrolTed - I was going to email you contact details for Notts police but I can't make the email thingy work ?

Mel, just means we can wheelie around and get away with it, as long as we don't speed past the gatso's ;-) ..

Umm. Maybe fun for a select few people that can actually drive or ride safely at speed, but no police presense makes white van man become even more neanderthal, and lets drunks get away with it. NOT a good thing.

Completely agree Hertsbiker!
Seems to me the anti speed propoganda deployed over the last couple of years is beginning to have an effect on the minds of the general populace. Its not necessarily a bad thing to flag up that speed can be a bad thing, but only if its made clear that speed is not ALLWAYS a bad thing.
Otherwise you get whole swathes of our great unwashed population congratulating themselves on what fantastic drivers they are just cos they do 69mph on a motorway and 29mph round town.
This morning I saw a great example of this. A woman (nothing sexist in this, honest) driving at 65mph on the A38. She was soooo close to the steering wheel I swear there could not have been more than a couple of inches between it and her (flat!)chest. Her elbows were actually behind her and level with the sides of her seat back! There is no way she was safely in control of the car. Needless to say she also had every light on, including front and rear fogs and high beam at 8.00am ona lovely clear bright morning. Her off side rear tyre was nearly flat.
She was completely oblivious to all this and the fact that other drivers were trying to warn her about her tyre and remind her about her high beam/fogs. When I passed her (at 80mph) she gave me the finger a mouthed a load of abuse.
No doubt she thinks she is a super road user. No doubt I would have got a ticket for speeding if plods box brownie had spotted me. No doubt in my mind though who represented the greatest threat to other roadusers this morning.
Why am I so depressed? Is it cos I know that this is increasingly the way things are going to be in the future?
