Newbie with a 944 and alternator question
Discussion
Hi all!
I'm acquiring a peach of 944 for peanuts this weekend however it hasn't been used for a while (approx 6 - 8 months) and needs a repair to the alternator prior to being driven back. Its over charging so I'm assuming the regulator has packed up. It does come with a spare one from another engine so I will be fitting that to get it going (assuming that alternator is ok) as everything else looks to have survived the down time.
How easy a job is it to replace an alternator on one of these? Its a 2.5 non turbo.
I rather stupidly only gave the alternators position a brief look but from what i remember it looked like the undershield needed removing to allow access to the unit which could be removed from below.
Does this sound feasible?
Thank guys!

Firstly, I'll point you to this helpful Porsche site for working out part numbers:
Porsche part PDFs
Looking at the illustrations for the engine, the alt is placed similarly to my 928 (which is not surprising!!!).
Pg 261 of the 82-85 version shows how the alt is mounted (pg 337 in the 85-88 manual).
Should easilt be able to do this from below (remember to disconnect the battery first).

Thanks for the link and help! Hopefully i may be able to replace the regulator in place, its just two screws. . . . .
Ref my 944 I'm paying £800 for it although this onesa unique situation. Its been standing for just under a year due to a bereavement and the family want it gone as its a bit of a sore reminder for them. It had a £6500 body repar and full respray in its orignal colour and looks absolutely fantastic plus it also comes with pretty much a complete car minus the shell and parts to repair the accident damage. Its not a rush or cheap repair done. It was a very high quailty bot of work and looks so good in the flesh plus its had a great many new parts fitted in and around the front of the car.
I can't believe i got it so cheap!
It ran perfectly after a jump (it'd been run during its time standing but not often engouh so the battery went flat which was new after the repair) and as far as i could find only this alternator problem needed sorting before I could drive it home. Oh and the headlights don't pop up!!!!! I'll wind them up manually somehow for the trip home though. The only real down sid eto this one is the interior condition. Its in one piece albeit with the standard tears on the seats just grubby and musty thats all.
