This may be a complete read herring however perhaps worth mentioning. I Recently had cause to remove the plenum and was pleased to find that the “Tuner” I paid last year to fit carbon fibre trumpets had actually fitted them, however the top of five of them had fairly large chunks of silicone attached. I guess that when fitting the plenum less care than would have been ideal was used and the sealant was transferred from the gasket surface onto the trumpets. Obviously prior to reassembly I carefully picked off all the silicone.

Now the interesting thing is that after doing this I took half a second off my previous best time at the local hill climb. Half a second is an enormous chunk of time and I can’t think of another reason.

I suppose the point is. When re fitting the plenum take care not to get sealant on the trumpets and if your car has been to the same “Tuner” that I used it may be worth the hassle of removing six bolts to check that all is as it should be.

Unless you've been there dozens of times and really have perfected it, I'd expect your times to vary and gradually improve. Track conditions can make a significant difference to grip and power levels too, so can relatively small changes to the car setup.

I would reccommend Red Hylomar, silicones swell and go soft in contact with fuel

Have done the hill a fair few times and generally have reasonably consistent times, typically within 0.25 in the dry, apart from the first run of the day which is usually 0.8 or so off the pace. At the last meting for example the two timed runs were within 0.05 of each other, but about half a second quicker than previously. It is interesting to look back a few years and see the step changes in times after changes during the winter. A032 rubber made a step change of about a second as did solid bushes and nice dampers the next year. Some engine work gained about 0.5 and this year the Slicks consistently found a little over a second, until last weekend after cleaning off the gunk when suddenly I was quicker.

I'm amazed (and impressed) at that level of consistency. I expect to be finding and losing tenths here and there even on circuits I've driven dozens of times, and track changes can also make a big difference in my experience. Maybe it's just me.

No need to be impressed it is just that I am consistently slow compared to others in the class. Fairly certain the improvement was the car and not me because off the start line it is a straight run into a speed trap. So far this year (apart from a wet meeting) I have been typically 82 or 83 at the trap, last weekend it jumped to 86. I also found more speed over the finish line up to 96 on both runs compared to between 92 and 94 for the season so far.

Hylomar blue is non-hardening, red is semi-hardening. I use Hylomar blue for sealing the intake, but since Matt recommends red that is probably better for the job.

I can't seem to find anyone on-line selling red frown

Do they still sell it.

May use the Blue if it works, as it will match the rest of the engine bay wink

The only drip with Hylomar blue, getting the stuf off when you have to take it apart again. Red comes off pretty easy with some petrol and a scourer....

Well if the blue never fully sets then I assume you don't need to take it off, maybe just add a bit more.
