Porsche Sat Nav Discs

Hi Guys,
Ive just bought myself a 2003 996TT and i'm waiting to take delivery of it. It has Sat Nav installed but I imagine the disc is well out of date.

Firstly, It doesnt have Postcode search and i'm wondering if the later discs will give it that facility.

Secondly, does anyone know a cheaper source of the discs, rather than going to an OPC for them. I have tried the Tele Atlas site but they dont appear to list them.

I already own a Tomtom but I want to avoid accessories in the car if possible, i'm sick of trailing wires all the time.

the nav system does not have a post code search facility, even on the newer cars

Nav Tech are the original publishers of the disks, although they will cost you the same as from an OPC. if you do a search on here i am sure someone said you can buy a set of nav disks for something like a vauxhall omega which are the same and will run

when i bought my pork a few months ago the main UK nav disk was missing so the owner bought a new set for me - they come in a nice leather carry case but they are still only dated 8.2005 - they dont even show the new A120 at stanstead which has been open for a few years but they cover most things and certainly stops me from using a tom tom etc.

the set comes with PCM2 multimedia update disks for the system, although i belive these are update disks for the operating system rather than the actual nav code. In total their are 8 disks now rather than the original 3 - and together they cover all of europe

I agree even the newer cars don't have post code search, I had a loan 07 Cayenne while my 996TT was being serviced and this did not have this facility. The Sat Nav disc was date stamped 10 2006.

Slightly wrong guys. The upgraded version of the SatNav on the 997 enables post code search (at least mine does).

Yes you're right. My car is a 2006 911 and it has Postcode search - you simply input the postcode (first 4 characters only) into the address field.

The upgrade costs just under 500 notes from an OPC... it isnt the new map disc that gives you the postcodes but the software update to the PCM

Make sure if / when you get the update done that they also give you the most up to date nav disc as well... 10/2006... unless anyone has got the 2007 one of course... otherwise you'll just have postcode and tmc but not up to date maps!!

I like PCM but think its shameful of Porsche to charge £2.5k for this and not offer a free update service, at least say for 3 years after new.
Incidentally, mid '07 cars are still coming with '06 discs.

The price is totally unjustifable in my opinion,it is the same mapping data that is used in much cheaper portable systems and the updates are about £100 for them.

All it does is encourage software piracy.

Would some one be able to tell me how to identify on the PCM screen what version of Nav software my 997 has?

I have looked myself but cannot seem to find version or date of my software.

I have the PCM2 system in my 2002 C4S. It doesn't have the postcode option but it does allow you to enter coordinates. I usually just go to www.multimap.co.uk, enter the post code and then make a note of the coordinates. Enter these into your PCM2 and it'll take you to the doorstep.

I appreciate that this may not be totally relevant, but I have just been through this same scenario with my BMW 330i. My DVD disk was dated 2005 and did not have postcode entry but I have recently updated both the operating system software AND the maps and it now does support postcode entry as described above. In my case it was the OS update which added the postcode facility - NOT the map data. Maybe there is an OS update available for the Porsche system too.

BTW, I bought my upgrade through eBay for £30 to include the 2007-2 European maps DVD AND the OS update on CD-ROM. I wonder if some enterprising individual can offer the same for Porsche systems. I will enquire.

Yes, its the same for the Porsche, They supply a multimedia update disc that enables postcode and TMC. As far as my enquiries have gone, You can only get the OS disc with the new maps.

If you can put me in touch with a supplier of said ...ahem..update discs, I would be most willing to pay a reasonable cost for them.

I'm also very good at making backup copies of Safedisc2 protected discs, if anyone needs that service to save them scratching their precious navigation discs.

well, I finally gave up and ordered the discs from my OPC. They arrived in the post this morning.

Typically, they come with a note to say that the system CD's should be installed by an OPC, and no further instuctions are given.

So, I ring the OPC and ask how to do it.....Answer......havnt got a clue, "we will get back to you on it sir". It's nice to know that OPC's have such a high competency level

Incidentally are there TMC broadcasts in the UK currently?

The manual for my PCM2 states that TMC will be enabled where TMC exists, presumably this means enabled by the factory rather than dynamically?

yep it works.....well it does on the sat nav fitted to my wifes mondeo

i have the multimedia upgrade for the pcm2 as my car was supplied with a new set of disks. i can see neither post code entry or tmc - maybe ive not set it up correctly - i would welcome comments from anyone who has
