"insurance disc"
Discussion
Was having a little think this morning, and got to wondering why isnt there a scheme whereby "Insurance Disks" are displayed in windscreens in much the same way as tax disks?
This must have been explored in the UK before and probably is used elsewhere in the world.
Would have throught it would make the BiB's job a little easier? maybe? maybe not?
Just wondered if anyone knew anything about schemes like this in the UK?

Well it is really you insure your self for your car , if you drive another car with the owners consent you get 3rd party cover as long as he has his car insured
My policy covers me for any vehicle owned, borrowed, sat in or in my care. How would that work then? not sure i'd be issued with a couple of hundred discs now.If the insurance industry would move to the concept of insuring the car and not the driver / policyholder then it would work. However, with the current concept of a Motor Insurance Policy being neither the car nor the policyholder but rather a bit of both, then an "insurance disc" just wouldn't work - all it would show was that there was some kind of policy in force for the car but wouldb't be able to show if the driver was insured or not due to the fact that we have the idea of named drivers.

The issue being that (at the moment, at least) insurance is not necessarily vehicle related whereas tax is.

Not actually the case marki. No legal requirement for the owner of the car to have his car insured. Some policies ( from Norwich of course ) make this a condition of your policy coverage but most do not
Indeed. I seem to recall that you can drive an otherwise uninsured vehicle on another motor policy that allows you to drive other cars, but were you to park the vehicle on a public road (ie. get out of the vehicle) then the owner / Registered Keeper of the vehicle could be immediately hit with an offence under the Road Traffic Act of keeping an uninsured vehicle on a public highway.
I used to think that was a good idea, but as we now have direct access to the insurance datadase via PNC it is not really that necessary, apart from the fact it would also be open to fraud/forgery, even now when someone produces a Drivers licence I tend to check it against the licence database, as quite a lot of disqualified drivers have obtained a duplicate before they get banned. It is also similar with Insurance certificates, I tend to check those as well, what with scanners etc quite a few are very good copies
