Hi all,

I'm a newbie to Alfa's but was wondering if someone could clarify if say this car http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/133071.htm has the gearbox at the rear axle?

No it doesn't. It was the older rwd Alfetta GTV (and later the 75 and SZ/RZ) that had the transaxle gearbox, not the fwd 916 series car pictured.

Crucially, it doesn't have it's drive at the rear axle either.

Durr - I'm sure I knew it was FWD - doh!

How about this one - Alfa 155 TS: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/183074.htm

Only really the 75 and GTV6. Granted there are plenty of other gorgeous RWD alfas, but they're the only relatively common, affordable, relatively recent ones.

So, these:

And, these:

(not especially flattering pics of either, but you gte the idea)

Think theres a Montreal in the PH classifieds for about £9k, that's basically a nicer trimmed GTV (like the one above) with a V8 in IIRC.

The Montreal was based on the older Giulia GTV, I think, not the Alfetta GTV.

Hopefully someone who properly knows the ins and outs (rick?) can confirm or deny...

Thanks all - case proven - I know FA about Alfa's!

Guess I'll be on the lookout for a 75 - the GTV looks so good but I think it'd be a potentially grim choice...

cheers

Here's what I believe to be a more flattering picture of a 75.... but I would, 'cos it's mine, fresh from a respray:

Hello! Yes. The Montreal was based on the 105 chassis so has a conventional front engine and gearbox and a live rear axle. It has a 2.6 quad cam V8 with mechanical injection so it's quite the grand tourer.
cool
The transaxles didn't appear until the mid 1970s in the 116 GTV, Giulietta, Alfetta and later the 90/75 and SZ.

Looks just like my old one except that had the 5 spoke Revolution alloys. It was a great car, much missed.

Fair enough, my point was at my sort of budget (and it's probably similar to a lot of other PHers, inclduing perhaps the OP) there are really only two RWD alfas, atleast of a vaguely modern era.

You're right that the obvious choices are the Alfetta GTV6 and the 75.

The only reason I posted was to clarify which car the Montreal was based on. With so many different models having the GTV suffix, as well as the GTV model itself, it can get a bit confusing.

Hmm, Well,

I've owned some GTV6 2.5s , several 3.0 75s and a Montreal. The Monty was loosely based on a 105 series giulia coupe, with a ZF gearbox up front - the same ZF gearbox as used on the Alfa 6 (I know this, as the Alfa 6 was sought after by monty owners for the gearbox).

Cars with a front engine and a rear transaxle I know about include: Lancia Auriela Spiders, Alfa GTV6, Alfa 75 (and its coupe SZ RZ cousins), Porka 924 & 944, Volvo 440, Corvette 6spd, Maserati 3200 Spyder (not in the coupe for some reason).

And after several TVRs I've just gone and bought me a 75 TS off eBay - Ooops... Never had an engine this small before - will I get crushed by BMW 4WD drivers?

Volvo 300-series.

Bit of a strange one as they ended up being a manual gearboxed Volvo although originally designed as a rubber-band DAF.
