land rovers taxed out of london

New ‘Low Emission Zone’ will penalise owners of diesel Land Rovers registered between 1973 and 2001
London’s new Low Emission Zone (LEZ) which comes into force in 2008 will affect Land Rover owners.
Owners who drive diesel versions of Series III Land Rovers, Ninety, One Ten and Defenders and registered between 1973 and 2001 will have to pay £100 per day for the privilege of driving in London.
And this isn’t the centre of London, this is all of London, including the suburbs. Basically, if you head inwards from the M25 and you drive one of the above vehicles, you will have to pay.
Although the LEZ comes into force next year, Land Rovers won’t fall within the rules until October 2010, when your vehicle will either have to meet the emissions standard, or you’ll pay the charge.
The good news is that you can modify your Land Rover to meet the standard by fitting pollution abatement equipment.
The bad news is that it will cost you around £2200 + vat.
The equipment manufacturers, who haven’t even designed the Land Rover versions yet, don’t think that there will be that much demand for the filters from Land Rover owners. ‘Why fit something costing £2500 to a vehicle worth not much more?’ said one.
And, of course, the cost of the filter isn’t the only issue. Your insurance will probably go up too. If you’ve an old diesel Series III worth, say £1000, you’ll be trebling its value – or at least the amount it is worth to you.
The trouble is that the street value of the Land Rover won’t increase with the amount spent on the filter. If the vehicle is stolen or written off, you are unlikely to get back the money you have paid on the filter, let alone the value of the Land Rover.

It's ok. The Goverment's attitude is - as usual - don't treat the cause, tax the outcome. At least all those Land Rovers will be driving everywhere other than London in order to establish pollution equilibrium outside the capital.
[/sarcasm]
When will they learn that eventually, one day, we'll get right f*cked off with them using a non-existant and scientifically-unproven 'pollution' as a way to extract more cash from people?
The irony is that no matter who you vote for, the Government always gets in.

Its about time these w__kers in government got the come-uppance they deserve, they should keep their snotty noses out of stuff they know nothing about and carry on rogering their secretaries, (male and female).
I know that I am not the only one who is getting really p___ed off with these people and their knee jerk reactions.
I suggest we have a convoy of the worst polluting vehicles we can find and park them outside red Kens house.
I don`t know obout being rogered by a farmer, I for one would like to drive a Land Rover up his A++SE personally.
Sorry all rant over!!

Well from what i read this does noe affect cars at all
'From 2010 the Low Emission Zone will include heavier diesel-engine light goods vehicles and minibuses. The lightest vans (under 1.205t unladen weight) will be excluded from this stage as they have car-like emissions. TfL estimates that 350,000 LGVs and minibuses in this category come into London each year, but that over three-quarters will already be compliant with the Zone, leaving a minority of fleet owners who will need to put in place new plans to comply. We are giving them three years notice of this change.'

The big Defenders that have more then seven seats plus get in the congestion charging zone FOC (full of passengers or not). Yet a Aygo has to pay? Ken is shot away, he aint got a clue! A seven seat diesel 4X4 with a full compliment of passengers will produce less pollutants per passenger then a Prius.
A question for you all: If you want to get seven people into town and keep congestion down do you use: A, two Prius or B, one Seven seat 4X4 or C, Two Aygos? What

Three 4x4s, normally. Car sharing just isn't the done thing in London. A question for you all: If you want to get seven people into town and keep congestion down do you use: A, two Prius or B, one Seven seat 4X4 or C, Two Aygos? What

I'm still struggling to believe that this will actually get implemented. Aside from anything else, the sheer arrogance of TfL in stating that by not introducing the new fees until 2008 will give businesses 18 months to all go out and buy shiny new compliant diesel vans just beggers belief.
It's just the assumption that all the small businesses have all got £15k-£25 per van just burning to be spent is astonishing to me.
As is the hypocrisy in that TfL is still happy to let 20 year old shitty buses and taxis run everywhere in London exempted from this little piece of Nazism.
So - when are you bloody Londoners going to vote Red Ken the IRA lover out of office then? Or are you all just going to whinge about him for another 25 years?

more details in an obviously biased press release.
Bottom line IMHO, some businesses have to renew or modify their fleet, they recoup this by charging us the consumer more, we end up paying for cleaner air in London.
How much cleaner and is it worth it .. well make your own mind up if you live in the Zone.
edited to add:
'From July 2008 lorries, buses, coaches, motorcaravans, ambulances and hearses between 3.5 tonnes and 12 tonnes will also be affected.'
Do land rovers fall into that category, or more likely into
