Autoglym - is it best?

I have always been an Autoglym man myself in the past.

But...

I have never owned a TVR before

Is Autoglym the best to wash a Chimaera in? If not, what is best?? I want it to shine....

Most people I know of swear by it, but I use Turtle Wax extreme, which works just as well IMO!

Zymol is a favourite amongst these pages. V.expensive though.

Thanks That pic was taken after a 20 mile drive ! But before the drive, it was washed & then 1 coat of Turtle Wax.... Probably gets pollished once every 6? weeks

take a look at www.meguiers.co.uk I have used/have most of there product range and it does what it says on the can. It is a resonable price and it works well.

I used to use AutoGlym but switched, for no reason other than I fancied a change, and the Meguiers stuff gets good press and works well.

Autoglym is great, goes on easy, comes off easy, but can be very dusty, but still gives a fantastic shine. I have used Turtle wax colour polish (on a mica blue Chim), goes on easy but a bit of a pig to get off, and not so dusty. Autoglym still my favourite.

To get the ultimate shine your going to need to do something like this


1.Rinse the car

2.Wash the entire car with washing up liquid,this will strip all previous polish/waxes that are on the car.

3. Polish the car, if paint looks ok (i.e no oxidization)(sp) a low abrasive polish like Autoglym is fine,remember you can always repeat the polish again if necessary.

4.Apply a sealant (usually a polmer) (usually liquid)they actually bond to the surface and provide long term protection,about 6 months is typical.This stage can be missed

5.Wax, ALWAYS use a good carnauba wax.In this instance avoid cleaner waxes s100 from Harley davison dealerships is good about £15.Blitz is good available from frost (link below) about £10.Zymol and Swissol are also good but IMHO are overpriced.Remember these waxes can be layered and mixed one on top of the other i.e a typical one is one or two layers of Blitz then lots of layers of S100.Most waxes don't last two months

6.Get a good detailing spray for touch ups between washes

7.When you are ready for another wash don't use washing up liquid it will strip your hard work use a proper car wash solution if you use the Zymol in halfords i suggest you halve the concentration.Then dry and wax.You should NOT need to polish the car every time you wash.Once or twice per year is typical.Re-wax the car




I've left out a couple of stages as most people dont bother (i.e claying)Claying can cause severe damage if done incorrectly.

Allow a day between wax layers

Remember always work in STRAIGHT lines generally the way air flows over the car when driving never circles

Avoid using anything which has silicone in it or wax wont adhere

Get some microfibre towels, makes the job easier

I wont list all the products i use as they may not be "suitable" for you

Err no..And yes i've tried most of them.Of the carnauba waxes mentioned, Blitz last longest and by some way.Polmer waxes last much longer as they form a chemical bond with your paint/clearcoat.Carnauba just stick to the surface there is no chemical bond as such
Zymol and Swissol are dearer for two reasons
1. Hype
2. They use natural ingredients
but they do smell nice

Zymol also do a wax specifically for GRP body panels. Developed for spoilers etc but might be worth a try on a TVR. If I had realised before I bought mine I would probably have got this wax instead of the normal one.

Been there done that its not designed for doing the whole car and £14 for two ounces

FWIW zymol recommend ITAL GLAZE for TVR's £59

I'm afraid that I dont agree. I have used numerous polishes like Autoglym, Mer, Turtlewax extreme, Turtlewax paint sealant etc etc, and the Zymol I applied 3 months ago is as good as new. When it rains, the water runs off the car like my rain-x treated windscreen. The hard work is in preparing the surface so the wax adheres well.

I have heard good things about Blitz, so I may get some for my other halfs Polo...
