Right, i polished my car last weekend so i know it was fine then.

All week its been sat on the drive in the rain (doesn't leak though wink) and i took it to work today and parked it in our underground secure car park.

Went out with the missus this evening and noticed a 3 inch scratch on the bonnet yikes

Then i notcied another, and another and yes another and another frown

they are over the bonnet, wings and roof yikes

they are not deep but have gone down to white and are all single scratches between 2-4 inches long.

Now i don't know what has done this, it could be my neighbours cat but its old and never seen it on the car and i'm sure it would have left more than 1 line with its claws. I also doubt its vandals as all the scratches are quite thin and not deep like a key would have been...

The only thing i can think it might be is i had to drive through a resurfaced road earlier and had lots of stones on it, the sign post said to do 20mph, i did about 5mph through the whole thing.....i could hear some stones bouncing off the car at times. Could these stones have done it? I was extremely careful not to go faster than walking speed.

Next question in, the scratches wont come out and from a distance you can't tell, but up close it looks f*cking awful and i am heartbroken weeping

having never made an insurance claim in my life, is this a valid claim to make off my company? I have 8 yrs ncb which is protected and happy to pay my excess if i get a respray

my question is as I haven't had an accident, and I don't know how the scratches happened do I have a leg to stand on as i know insurance companies don't like to pay out rolleyes

a very sad and pissed off edd frown

Very sorry to hear about this Edd.
Do you keep your car outside alot?
My money would be on cats. I have cought cats on the car before but only when the cover has been on her. Though not recieved any damage like you described. I'm thinking the cat must have thought it was a game when the wind got under the covers the cat tries to GET IT!!!!
Now got some straps to stop this.
Not sure about claiming on the insurance. Other wise alot of people would be claiming for stone chips.
I know stone chips are bad enough but are the scratches realy deep? Can you post some pics?
Anyone know of any good repair/cleaning products that might reduce these?

Sorry to hear of your bad news. Could be the cat as I have had something like this happen to me before.

So even if you "wet" the scratches, can you still see them?

Are they in different directions and as such could you have done it while washing the car? If there mostly on the roof and bonnet then it could be a cat keeping warm?

Have a few on mine and they came from the car cover I used to put on to keep the car safe from scratches!

Tvr Edd, when you polished your car did you use a white looking polish??
White polishes when they dry,2-4hours turn white!! any scatches in your paint will then show up especially if you have a dark coloured car.First down to Halfords buy some T-Cut, Turtle Wax 'black' Colour Magic and rags. T-Cut a scatch mark for a minute or so, rub off, apply Turtle Wax 'black', let dry, rub off.
If the scatch marks arn't deep they will be gone.

Mark.

Right, little update.

The scratches are too deep to polish out, i've tired that already frown

However this morning i noticed I have a scratch going along the whole line of the roof yikes

This one isn't as deep as the others so may polish out, but even so this long scratch could not have been done by a cat and i doubt very much by my own washing of the car, i always check the sponge and clean it out.

I don't have a cover on the car so its not that. I've had the car almost a year and been at this house so am surprised if it would be a cat.

To be honest it looks like I've driven through a hedge and scratched the car, but I haven't done that one

so more importantly, does anyone know from past experience if a claim on my insurance is at all possible or not?

My old Cerbera had a scratch that I dint notice until I washed it, it was on the roof too. I took the car to Phill Woods, a good TVR bodyshop in Essex, and he told me it was Rosso Pearl and would need a complete respray!

Called my insurance company and they would accept my claim, with the costs going to them but I would loose my NCB, not too much of a problem. They did ask me to take it to another bodyshop for a second opinion.

When I did they guy said it wasnt Rosso Pearl but Cheery Pearl, a Rover Colour. Also he said the scratch would polish out and did it for me then and there, didnt even charge me, but did ask me to take him around the block in it!

So, to recap, go to you insurance, expect to pay your excess and loose some NCB, but also go to a few bodyshops for comparison.

Thanks for that extra300, I have protected NCB so hopefully shouldn't lose anything.

I will also try and get to a bodyshop for an opinion

If you are going to put in an insurance claim then just make sure that you have a "reason" as too what has caused the damage, do not ring them up saying that you are not sure how it's happened. I would go along the route of you have left your car parked up for a few days and it has suffered some form of malicious vandal damage (scratches all over the car). If they accept this then they will ask you to take the car to a recognised Paint / Bodyshop to have the damage assessed for costs purposes, chances are that they will not even send out an assessor. If you have NCB protection then you will not loose them.

Hope this helps...

Jules.

Cheers Jules, appreciate that

It could well be vandalism as I cannot work out how else it's been done......

I reckon this...

The fella before you, or the one before him, has done an excellent job with a scratch stick and some coloured wax and covered them up beautifully. Nothing wrong with that - after all if yopu can't notice it then no one else will notice it.

You've them come along and given it a good washing and waxing without coloured wax/cleaner and the scratch has begun to fill with white residue or you've washed the repair out somewhat.

Only my opinion, but sounds very likely this may be your problem.

Possible theory, but i've polished the car probably 20 times since having it, surely it would have come up before then?

Also it seems strange than about 30 scratches appear after one polish, surely if that was the case then some would appear before others and not all in one go.

alsothe scratch that goes the whole line of the roof looks like it might polish out.

Trust me, i always look at the condition of the bodywork on the car which is why I can be so confident it's happened in the last week and any scratches, chipes i pick up very quickly which is why this has shocked me as there are so many frown

it sounds pretty definate to me thet some jealous malicious bas@@rd has done that damage to your car, sorry to hear your plight anyway. but on a positive noteas said above if you say its been vandalised insurers should repair it for you and fortunately you were shrewd enough to have protected no claims

Be Carefull. A protected no claims does not mean that you will be paying the same for the insurance next year. You will still have eight years no claims but the claim will affect your insurance.

I had this daft argument with my wifes insurance company

Thanks julian, i realise that next year i will still have full ncb but that i will have to mention i have a claim of say £4k for a respray which will go against me, but even if they put my premium up 50% then it'd be worth it to get the car sorted

i really don't think its vandals as the scratches are deep but not deep enough for a key etc as they are quite thin, almost like someones used a knife to scratch the car

still pisses me right off frown

Definitely sounds like vandalism to me, especially as you only noticed it after leaving it in a car park. A cat wouldn't have done that, unless it's a particularly malicious cat with steel tipped claws and the mentality of a twisted vandal.
Even though you may have a protected NCB, you won't be flavour of the month with the Insurance companies come renewal time, as you will have to declare that you have made a claim.

Just a wild guess but you haven't used one of the wipers that dries your car after you cleaned it have you (flexiblade) I use one of these on my TVR with no problem but when I used on my new Lexus it left small scratches on it all over which only showed when it dried! Well pissed me off as it was 1 week old as it happened.

Sounds like vandals, I have 3 cats and have never had this sort of problem. I've had the odd dog scratch on other cars when I've left them in car parks and they've jumped up them. Very best of luck, this sort of thing is really annoying.

Had this on my wifes car with next doors alsation. Dog was barking, and when we went out to see the dog was actually on the roof of the car barking at the engine.

Popped the bonnet to find a rat sitting on the engine. The rat legged it and so did the dog.

The next morning in the sunshine EVERY horizontal surface of the car had been scratched to hell.
