I've tried using the forum search facility on this and I seem to be getting results from other PH forums re other cars, so sorry if this has been raised before (which I'm sure it was sometime late last year)

I *might* be getting hold of some VZ HSV(VXR) R8 rims and I know standard recommended tyre width is 245 all round, but I'm considering 255's on the rears. Is this ok or am I risking them rubbing on the arches? Also thinking on protection from kirbing (not that my current CV8 ones have been - any damage has been done by my dealership and sneakily ie, badly repaired but, that's another story)

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Don't know if it helps, but I have standard 18" CV8 rims, currently running 255/35 18 tyres (Pirelli P Zero)

Thanks. I thought some of you had gone up to this width (or more?) but wasn't too sure. It'll be followed up with a trip to see the 'fishy' boys and their road response pack and alignment thingy.

If I go ahead, there'll be some VZ CV8 wheels up for grabs fairly soon.

Just out of interest, can I ask where you got, and how much the new rims are. Are they 19"?

Paul - I've got 255/35 on the rear & 235/35 on the front, both Toyo Proxes & I think a really good tyre. As you know, I'm looking for some 19" wheels -in black - but don't know if the 255's will fit into the arch then!

I've heard of people fitting up to 265 or even 275 tyres, 255 are pretty narrow so you should have no scrubbing issues as long as it isn't lowered. I think it would be fine.

Rear has more room than front. I have 245's on the front and perhaps around 4mm clearance to the shock tower. So no room to spare there. The backs are a different story, more room there and 255 would be no problem.

There must be a practical limit to what you should fit to an 8 inch wheel though. Most cars with 8 inch wide wheels have 225 or 235 tyres. The new VXR8 has 9.5 inch rear wheels to accommodate it's 275s.

I assume 255 are the maximum width for safety reasons that you'll get on an 8inch rim? I'd love to go further but getting a nice aftermarket wheel over here is a joke.

Paul-H, I thought it was your car with the 255's. I now remember you showing me the other month when you came over. Btw, you had quite an audience over on the building site when you pulled away.

Gas_Man (Jason) I'll pm the details over to you re costs etc when I get the estimate back from the supplier (hopefully 2mrw).

Sorry didn't qualify I was talking rears only here.

255 is definitely fine for the fronts, but yeah a 9 or 9.5" rim would be better suited for a 275 tyre, which is why a staggered setup is the way to go IMHO.

I don't think there's room for wider wheels at the back. Clearance between the arch and suspension arm is already tight.

Running 265's on on a 4-door at the rear,

here and no clearance problems. Much better feel and traction at the back-end.
245's on the front with max static camber (-1 degree which places the tyre just clear of the spring cup).

If you run 19" wheels on a 4-door 245's are tight all round, next tyre change will go for 235 at the front as cornering at speed fouls the arches, would not go past 255 on the rear due to rim width.

Thanks Paul - didn't notice...thought with it being a Saturday, there'd be no one there!
Still searching for my 19" wheels too...apart from Halfords, do you know of a good wheel supplier that doesn't charge the earth...?
(BTW - all's well - good job, thanks!!!!)

Paul - sourced my wheels from JHP - HSV VZ 19" R8's, but they are denting the bank account a tad! I prefer to keep the car more or less in line with Holden styling. Very few aftermarket ones appeal.

Now been told by one tyre fitter, that 245 front tyres will have to be a taller profile than the 255 tyres on the rear!!! Is this correct? I thought you were supposed to have the same profile all round?

same profile on a thinner tyre means the tyre wall be smaller ie a smaller circumference, the profile is the ratio of tread width to side wall height. therefore to maintain overall circumference lower the profile for wider wheels and higher it for thinner wheels. Most tyre web sites have a conversion table on them. Hope this helps!

Stock is 245/35R19. Having 255/35s on the rear equates to a difference in circumference of about +1.1% which isn't much. If you go down to 30 profile rears the difference will be bigger with a difference of nearly -3%. Going from 235/40R18s to 245/35R19s has a difference of +1.3% anyway.

I'm not so sure now of the exact size...I'm 99% sure they 255 35 18 on the rear & 235 35 18 on the front but it was the start of May since I've been home...so...I'll re-check in Sept...they're still good for another 20K yet anyway!

So to basically sum up, I assume it's ok to use 255 tyres on an 8" rim (on the rears) with 245 at the fronts without causing too many problems.

Next up, the tyres... so many choices and even more woe for the credit card! Looking at tyres on mytyres (seem cheapest so far) any one from here used them?
