FAN BELT GONE

My alternator light came on on my way home from work. The temp guage was OK so I assumed it was just another faulty warning light. 1 mile later there were gurgling noises and the temp was off the scale. I stopped, opened the bonnet and left the fan running whilst frantically giving the water pump CPR. This lasted for 5 mins until the gurgling stopped. It needed 1 litre of coolant. I've no idea what belt to use but I have fitted a toothed belt (1175mm x 12mm) off an SD1 which fits but with the adjuster on max. The belt seems tight but flops about when backing off at high revs.

I haven't driven the car since, other than to drive the final 100yds home. Will the engine be OK? Is there another belt I should fit? Is this the excuse I've been waiting for to fit a 6.0 litre VXR8 unit?

Wrap a bit of thick string or rope around the pulleys and take that down the motor factors for a measure ? Maybe get a better adjustments as well.

Check the pulley's line up as well or the new belt will soon go slack .

Halfords belt is HB1100a

Thanks for the tip Chestwig, but is the Halford part no. for a fanbelt or to hang a medallion on.....

Many thanks to Chestwig. Went to Halfords and bought HB1100a and it fits perfectly allowing plenty of adjustment for wear.

Took car for a run and it drives perfectly so no engine damage. Pity, I really needed an excuse to fit that 6 litre V10.....

I may be a bit thick - but is this belt number ok for the 350i ?

I should have pointed out my car is a 1988 350i with power steering mounted low down on the nearside. The belt drives just the alternator and water pump. A skinny thing. It cost only £3.99 at Halfords in Preston which I didn't think was bad. I assume it is 1100mm long, hence the part no.
