Househunting at the mo so using the SatNav to find the properties and, as you all know it always takes you down the single lane country roads whenever it thinks it can get away with it.
This has highlighted just how poor the dipped beam is.
My questions are:
Are there aftermarket bulb replacements that do the job?
Does anybody like Venison

In my current car I have aftermarket Xenon HID headlights as the dipped beam is terrible as standard. I paid about £100 for a set of Bosch ones from eBay which came with the ballasts, bulbs and wiring, in my opinion the best money I have exer spent on the car (even better then the £150 brand new leather interior).
Replace bulbs with those designed for main beam, as described here:

You have to modify the bulb by trimming some plastic out of the connector and also there's a bit you have to snip off one of the three metal locating bits around the edge to make it fit. It's an easy mod and makes a hell of a difference to night driving.
ETA: this is the same mod that gareth h is talking about.

FREE MOD!
I Forget the detail (search and ye shalle finde) but i literally swapped the bulbs over from the high beam to dipped. yes you have to cut the plastic lug out of the connector on both sets, but it does not damage their integrity. and now i have nice bright dipped beam and a more "usable" main beam.(i always found when you dip your lights after using main beam, the difference was so great you might aswell have not had your lights on...)
Definitely worth doing this mod, you will not believe the extra light you get (and NO FLASHES from oncoming cars as the beam is still set at standard)

Hi guys,
Sorry for the slow reply but I've had no access to a computer for almost a week.
HID headlights do not require any modifications to the cars OEM wiring, they are indeed simple plug and play. It should take no longer then 30 minutes to fit a kit.
HID headlights MUST have headlight washers and levelers IF they are factory fitted units, if they are fitted after the car leaves the dealership then you do not need these. If the headlight unit has not been approved for HID bulbs then they are not actually street legal (such as my MGF) but I have had no problems with the police or with the MOT test.
If you do decide to fit these then its at your own risk, but I have had mine for over a year and quite a few other MGF owners have converted their cars since seeing mine.
This is what is included in the kit.
A few pics of my car with 1 Halogen OEM (yellowish) and 1 Xenon HID (blueish 6000k), the bottom pic shows 2 Xenon HIDs to show the colour they normally look (white rather then blue).

In some aftermarket fitments they can be very annoying and in some OEM installations also, the main one being Range Rovers. I really hate them in some vehicles but if the headlights are correctly adjusted and you get the right kit they cause no problem at all.
I've had MGF's with HID's behind me or going the other way and never had a problem, they were no worse then most Halogen OEM fitments. In the time I've had mine I've never once been flashed by other drivers.
My advice is to get a decent kit like the Bosch one and make sure your headlights are adjusted correctly.
