Seen a couple of cars.

Both C4 Factory Wide Body. One, mint, with 15K miles @ £25K. The other with 85K miles at £12.5k both lefties.

Something tells me I should splash out and pay for the low milage. It might pay in the long run.

Any thoughts?

A few quick thoughts (bear in mind I'm not hugely up to speed on air cooled 911's)

The 964 .. Great car , a few small vices .. Flywheels , engine leaks , oil pipe leaks. Get a car that's had the work done. I'm betting a really low miler will have all the original 'idiosyncrasies'.

If you buy a car that's expensive cos it's got low miles , then every time the Odo ticks over you'll be cringing , watching your money getting sucked away from you.

A 964 with 80 odd K miles is a low milage car anyway!! ... Make sure it's had the work done , and that's the one!!

A really low mileage 964 will probably have other problems associated with extreme lack of use ... Perished rubber bits .. perhaps no oil change in years .. saggy suspension ... etc etc.

What he said.
I bought a "low mileage" car (not a Porsche granted) and put it into daily use when it had covered precisely the distance from the chap's home to the MOT station and back the previous year. I spent the next 6 months fixing what fell off due to lack of use.
Get the cheaper one if its sound and spend the rest on upgrading/replacing the bits you you want to.

Thanks chaps. I didn't expect those responses! Make perfect sense, and the grin factor will be sweeter as it'll keep cash in the pocket. The g/f wants to use it as her daily so again, that would be better to go for a cheaper car than watch it shed it's low milage advantage.

Hmm.

I'll give the guy a call.

Cheers

If you get a chance , have a look at what Peter Morgan had to say about a 964 he reviewed in July's 911&pw .. He makes a lot of sense , I'd be much more inclined to buy the 100k 964 that's had all the boxes ticked ..

DON'T JUMP IN!! It really does pay to have patience and wait for the right one to come along after you've don't an amount of research into what you should be looking for.

I think you said earlier you were willing to spend £25k on one ... Would you not be better off putting the same money into a 993/996??

I'll get a copy. Yeah - I know I should do my research but I do like the thrill of quick decision!! (although no necessarily the expence eg. 3200GT)

I just dig the 964 profile - so no 993 0r 996 for me. biggrin

The 964 is one 911 that you need to know your beans on , or need to get a pre-purchase check done , it can be a triumph or a tyrant!!

The Peter Morgan article is just one page long ... You'll be able to read it at the bookshop without buying hehe

Best of luck ...

One "normal 964 issue", dual distributor drive belt failure, with potential catastrophic results for ignition timing. See 911 & Porsche world article by jonny Tipler, about his snapped crankshaft. Don't be put off though, a simple vent kit (£50?) will prevent this.

Advise you read more than a one page article, or hire an expert to PPI the car before you buy. Understand that Mr Morgan does thos inspections himself.

Do you need an lhd car? Always difficult to sell on and v difficult to trace history back to one's satisfaction?...Don't forget the cylinder head seal problems with 964s too...

Definately buy the higher milage car, just run in and you can drive it lots without detracting from its value, put any significant miles on the low miler and its worth £13K. LHD is a much better driving position in a 964 (and probably in other 911's too but have only had a 964 in LHD)

No need for LHD but I just haven't seen a RHD black on black C4 Factory Wide Body available here. Plus the thought of US weather conditions as garaging makes me thing it might be in better nick.??

Didn't US cars come with some extra emissions gubbins which made them slower? Is it definitely a US market car or is it mainland Europe?

There are enough LHD 964s in UK and mainland Europe I would have thought, without the expense of shipping and emission strangled performance of the US cars.

Wide body 964s are rare in the UK, can't remember when i last saw one for sale (and I look at lots of ads..)

If your heart is set on one then fill your boots but reloading the cost of shipping onto the cost of the car could have you sitting in a proper nice RHD 964 (probably not widebody).

They look fierce well in black

You're a brave man to buy a 964 from 4000 miles away! take your point about the rust issues though although is "salt lake" city an issue!? with the dollar as it is there cannot be a better time for this kind of plan. Good luck. Ian

Having just spoken to Rev and Customs, that €50,500 15K mile car's is looking like €65,270! That's without adjustments to Uk requirements and MOT.

You gotta REALLY be in love with it to pay that.

I'll need another plan.

If I liked Viola I'd be sorted! biggrin
