I know the 550 maranello was produced from 1996 through to 2002 and I am thinking of going this route as a comfortable long distance hauler. I've read the previous threads and reliability does not seem to be a big issue, excluding a few relatively minor problems.
I am unable to establish if there was any major progression and alteration over the years with the 550. Did the later cars have bigger brakes, hp upgrades or any other improvements, etc ?. Would a 98 be the same as a 2000 model.
Any help and advice would be very much appreciated,
yours truly ignorant, Graeme

there were a couple of recalls around 1999 from memory: Steering rack was the major one. If you are looking mine's for sale at KHPC. All the history is on :

One of the most amusing articles I have read in a long time. You have a brilliant sense of humour. I presume silver with red. Are you really sure about a 246?, beautiful car but almost best kept beside the television to dribble over when you get fed up with UK Gold. Perhaps I should buy one so I don't spend so much bloody time on these web forums and my eye sight might start to improve. No comments please. smile

I'm considering the same thing for about this time next year - a 550 for European trips or longer UK trips. What are the typical running costs for such a car? Servicing? Tyres etc?

Go buy one boys! Had mine 18 months now and love it. Got 21mpg out of mine going to Le Mans last week, cruising at 90-100. It's a different story around town though. The worst I've got was 100 miles out of a 80 litre tank. Tyres have done 4500 miles now, and show no sign of wear at all - although I've not switched off the ASC yet!

That's a relief! Autocar said that the best they got was 13mpg! Maybe they tweaked the press cars smile

How reliable are they? I'd be looking at £40-£50k, and the cars in that bracket are 8 or 9 years old. I expect a few things to break, but there's nothing more depressing than constantly getting your wallet out just to keep a car's head above water.

Always tinkering with it I'm afraid. New airhorn trumpet a couple of weeks ago,(pattern from Halfords matched the original Fiamm!) Fan switch this week, 'cause it's running a bit hot in trafic. Nothing much to worry about. But I expect it might be different story if you were running it in to Ferrari every week. Make sure you've got a good specialist nearby that won't lift your leg everytime you need a bit of fettling. Although to be fair, my local Ferrari parts dept is a mine of useful info on any given subject.

13mpg is for eager journo's who don't always have the necessary respect for someone elses property!
