Discussion
I have noticed some xkr have quad pipes some do not was there a face lift or model change if so when....
i understand the difference between the the 4.0 and the 4.2 but why do people talk about the 2003 being "the one" is there a big difference between a 2002 and the 2003

The 2003MY is 4.2 but some cars registered in 2002 were 4.0 and some 4.2. 4.2s usually have the twin rear pipes (standard fit) but you can fit twin pipe ends to older exhausts and the David Manners replacement system has twin rear outlets. Many have also bought better exhausts to replace the crimped one fitted as standard

If I am not mistaken, the initial 2003 4.2 XKR has the same 'body' as the 2002/03 4.0ltr XKR, the 'major' changes being the engine and gearbox. These cars both had twin tail pipes.
The quads came in on the 'R, when the XK was given a cosmetic facelift, with different front / rear bumpers and side skirts, different wheel selections etc., in 2004.
So there are numerous changes as Jaguar always 'evolve' their cars over the course of production.

4.0 had 5 speed auto box, so J-gate has 2 3 and 4. 4.2 had 6 speed auto so J-date says 2 3 4 and 5.
Yes some 4.2's did have 4 pipes, I remember doing the PDI's on them, so it was from Jaguar not an after market thing. I cant remember that exact change over date, think its the last facelift with the fatter bumpers and side skirts. 2004 ish
Last facelift, fat bumpers, side skirt + 4 pipes.54 reg 2004

previous model. 03 2003, normal bumpers no side skirts.

As far as I know 4.0 were 370bhp and 4.2 were 400
I dont think there is any difference in performance etc. From a 2002 4.2 and a later than late 2005 model, so why a 2003 would be THE ONE is beyond me.

Because the face lift looks the biz, the MPG is far better on the 4.2ltr over the 4.0ltr thanks to the 6 speed auto. Plus the timing chain tensioners are the metal ones so won't fail like on the 4.0ltr engine.G
