Using a Fuji S6500 at the moment and about to go to the States so have been thinking about an upgrade with a favourable exchange rate. Have been tempted by EOS 400 with standard lens and 75-300. However having spoken to various people they reckon Canon lenses are crap and I'd be better going for a Nikon D40X with standard 18/55 and 75/300VR. Other alternatives are either camera and third party lens. What does everyone reckon. Canon or Nikon? Lens? buying in US?

I really don't think there is much between Canon and Nikon lenses. I've used Nikon for 20 years, but often recommend Canon.

there is nothing between canon and nikon lenses really however the D40(X) is flawed in the features it has primarily not being able to autofocus with non AF-S lenses. the D40 camera are a waste of money IMHO.

FYI - the D50 doesn't have such issues.

The D40 is a toy. Anything else is just a matter of personal preference whether it be Canon, Nikon or whatever.

The D40 can produce some very nice shots, but as said its severely lacking features you'd expect in a dSLR even ignoring its inability to focus with most lenses.

IF you want AF, the money you save on that body will soon be spent on more expensive lenses, and more.
