Boxster service history
Discussion
Hi, wanted to ask Porsche owners something. I'm looking to buy a Boxster, 2005 onwards, budget of no more than £30000, black with some spec. Found a car, went to look at it, was very nice. Thought everything was good to go. My last Q to the seller was about the service history. He say's the service history is not Porsche service history, but a friends garage. Its a 2005 car and the warranty expired in March this year. Would you buy a Porsche without the service history?
Everyone gets carried away with Boxster servicing...porsche servicing looks better in the service booklet but truth be told they are no harder to service than a Ford Fiesta..its only when you need re builds etc specialist tools come into play. It wouldnt put me off but i think you should have a 111 point check and a warranty slapped on for good measure.
OK - his "mate's" garage. This may indeed be true. And his mate may well have done s sterling servicing job. But a "mate" does not a "respected Porsche indepdendent" make - and certainly does not equal an Official Porsche Centre.
Now - the car may be just as good. Really - no reason why not. But come resale time your prospective purchaser has dozens of cars to choose from - many of them with "Full Porsche Main Dealer Service History". He will have a few more cars stamped up by "a reputable independent Porsche specialist" the list of which is known to canny enthusiast buyers who will be looking for a small discount over FPSH whilst knowing that the car has been looked after to the highest standard.
And then there will be your car. Serviced. At a "mate's".
So. Find out how much a similar spec car would cost at an OPC, from a reputable independent Porsche dealer (with indpendent service history) and privately. Then offer a reasonable price. Because come re-sale that's all you can expect.
The bloke with the car now had the option of saving money at servicing time or saving re-sale value. He took the former.

Enthusiasts will buy a Porsche with an indy history.
More general non enthusiasts will look for OPC history and pay for it.
NO ONE buys a Porsche which has been services "at a mate's."
Making the assumption its not done intergalactic mileage means that it will have been its first service only which is effectively an oil and filter change etc. At two years it will need the brake fluid changing.
Providing he has reciepts for genuine porsche parts then it wouldnt neccersarily be a show stopper, and wouldnt (I think) impact the warranty if it had any left. Definate negotiation point though.
That said for the cost of the first service, why you wouldnt get it done at an OPC is beyond me.
Christ my dad is a mechanic and runs his own perfectly reputable business, and even I decided that it was worth going to an OPC for the first service on mine (even if I did supply my own mobil 1!)..

Also the consideration that Porsche are now regularly giving generous goodwill payments to cars that are out of warranty and have RMS/Engine Failure (dependent on mileage and age). Their very first criteria to get a goodwill payment is a fully stamped up main dealer history. On a 4 year old car its not such a big deal, but on one just out of warranty that lack of stamp could prove costly.
