Heat resistant TVR Purple Paint?
Discussion
Hi bhpjohn
I guess this is for your rocker box covers. USAutomotive sell engine enamels and there is a colour which is similar; unfortunately it comes in a tin and not an aerosol. I guess you could buy two appropriate tins (expensive) and blend to get a perfect match.
Anyway, I bought a VHT engine enamel aerosol (black) for about £8 from the above outlet. One can is enough for both covers. I have to say that I'm immensely impressed with the stuff. After spraying the covers and letting them air dry I baked them in the oven for an hour and a half at about 250 deg C. Once they'd cooled I set about removing the paint film from the proud surfaces of the covers with some 400 grade wet-and-dry. Took me 'kin ages: this stuff is very, very abrasion resistant. If I get round to it, I'll get a shot posted over the weekend.
You'll have no problems removing the old purple paint; it's rubbish. I had the luxury of a blast cabinet but I'm sure a general paint stripper would work.

Thank you very much for that, yes it is for the rocker boxes, i'm surprised no one has tried to make any heat proof stuff yet? Presumably the missus wasn'y around when you baked your boxes? P.S Just been to USAutomotive website, which colour did you think was close?

Now, you're going to laugh at me for this but I had a very close friend some years ago who was one of the countries leading Hot Rod builders.
I was having no luck finding some purple engine paint (for a Fiesta ... yes, I know) and he told me it's all a con, just use household emulsion. I got some Dulux mixed up in B&Q and the paint was still on the block and rocker cover looking perfect 2 years later when I sold the car!

Just double checked myself; I'm sure there used to be a colour guide but don't see it now. 'Frosts' do tins of engine enamel but I didn't see anything reminiscent of purple. It could be that ordinary primer and car top coat would be o.k but can't be certain. I can vouch for the VHT stuff I've used though: real good; just limited in colour range.P.S Just been to USAutomotive website, which colour did you think was close?
