I have a mate who's getting very tempted with porca ownership, he's looking @ 993 TT's, trouble is he's a serial upgrader .. One question I couldn't answer was about getting a high mileage 993TT (smaller outlay) and then modding it.

If the the cars had a good life, ie regular service/runs etc how would the engine behave to power hikes with say 80k odd on the clock, nothing silly, 450/480 ish... Would there be any need for internal work due to mileage?

Am no expert by far, but I think it would be wise to have the engine in bits at 80k or so if wanting to mod. I had mine rebuilt at 63k and although the motor was in general good shape, the piston rings, valve guides and other stuff (I cannot remember) got changed due to wear.

Especially if your pal is going for 480 or so, the motor needs to be in rude health IMO. Also remember when your buddy comes to sell would be hard to shift the car if it has been running mods for some times, with no engine work.

Might a better optionb be to buy a modded car, such as the 993 here?? ....

Walk up to a wall, any wall, preferably of dry stone rendition, somewhere by the idyllic vista of the dreamy dell of Tarn House in The Lake District, present yourself before the edifice with legs akimbo, undo yon zipper and proceed to urinate, copiously.

This will symbolise, better than anything, the realities of modifying this car.

Ok, so that means what, that when you need a waz you drive miles to waz on only the best wall, so the 993TT is the best car to mod?#
or is it more like when you need a waz you HAVE to always go miles to piss on that kin posh wall, so the 993TT will infuriate you with its needs ?

He prefers his cares on direct debit to the tuners I'm afraid, I'd be scared if I ever saw this guy with 50 big ones in his hands!

I'll take not on the strip and search though, is this a pants down exercise, ie £5k plus?

But lots of fun despite the financial insanity. Best if he has a second car.

If you want more proper horses than 430/440 then I agree with the guys here - to do it right is big bucks.

But you can have a reliable motronic-boost 430/440 for reasonable cash - either FVD's chip or Porsches own 430.

Has your mate every driven a TT 911? perhaps 0-100mph in 9 seconds dead and 30-70 in 3.4 would be fast enough?

He's driven my warmed over 996TT and loved it but prefers old school, I know for a fact he'll want to mod it after a few months so I'm trying to give him best advise.. The 996tt mod route is quite reasonable up to 500bhp, what sort of costs do the 993TT stages come to?

There's a lot of misinformation out there so being a modest k16 man myself I'll leave it to somebody who's done it to reply.

A couple of guys who've already posted on this thread have seriously modified 993tt's so hopefully they'll come back in.

if not I can add my 2 penneth.

You can get 448bhp without too much trouble on the K16's (i did!) with the help of 100 cells, sports exhausts, and a clever ECU. In my case care of RS Tuning - in fact the ecu came from Martyn's car (MOD500). Overboost facility saw me within a whisker of 500lb/ft.

Anything more than this means £££££ - you have been warned!

Der, nice to have you back biggrin

Yep, tuning can be be pissing into the wind I agree, hence why buying a modded car is the best option.

Just checked my rebuild bill and it came to £5, 250 (exc VAT). Remember buying a 993tt with 80k + miles will mean such work (plus new turbos probably) pretty soon, so either way you are in for some bills in the near future I would guess.

For prices of upgrades see here for e.g:

BTW VS, the RS ecu did not come from me, though the pukka sports cats / zorst did smile

D'oh, that's right, the Techart bits and turbos came from you, the RS ecu came from someone on rennlist (originally from a car we all know as C1SKO) biggrin

Martyn - still reeling from that Vmax pax lap i had with you... quicker than a CGT!
