Hope Silverstone officials don't follow trend at Wimbledon!

The Official Wimbledon website says:
Prohibited Items
The following items are prohibited from the grounds of the AELTC:
any item which may be interpreted as a potential weapon, including sharp or pointed objects
(e.g. knives, large corkscrews)
and ‘personal protection’ sprays
large flags (max. 2'x2') and banners
rattles and klaxons
oversized hats and any objects/clothing bearing political statements and/or commercial identification intended for ambush marketing.
Visitors in possession of prohibited items may be refused entry or ejected from the grounds. Prohibited items may be left in the Left Luggage facilities outside the grounds or handed to AELTC security staff for disposal. There will be five Left Luggage facilities outside the grounds, on the Golf Course, Car Park 1 and St Mary's Church car park.

good to see you researched that fully, do you work for the daily mail? they are not banning the union flag at all. they are banning any large flag which can restrict the viewing of people behind the flag. makes sense to me, if i have paid a fortune for a centre court ticket, the last thing i would want is a flag blocking my view.
you can generally see more than the piece of track directly infront of you at silverstone so i doubt they would ban flags, especially as they are on sale inside the general admission area..... waving tehm in the grandstands may be considered somewhat unfair on the chaps behind you though. a bit of common courtesy is what is called for.
if you want to wave a flag, surely it is polite to make sure you are not restricting anybody elses view...

Flags cannot be attached to the catch fencing or spectator barrier (1 metre behind the catch fencing). Spectators with Jordan and Ferrari flags are specifically reminded that to a driver, the colours of these flags mean something else...if you want to wave a flag, surely it is polite to make sure you are not restricting anybody elses view...

From the track even someone in a yellow coat can look like a flag. You tend to notice the colour first. This is why marshals are encouraged to not wear anything that is the same colour as the flags and especially not red or yellow.Admittedly when it comes to F1 then they would probably only be looking at their cockpit lights rather than at the actual flags.

its like implying that a footballer mistook a fan wearing a red shirt sat in the stands for one of his teammates also in red on the pitch.
a driver should know where the flagging points on a circuit are and act accordingly though having seen the standards of some club racers i can understand your point.....
Any decent driver won't be looking at the flag points 
We had some drivers give a talk on where they are looking during a lap of Combe a few years back. As they exit Camp all them said they are are looking well past post A1 and up towards Avon Rise. This explains why they quite often fail to see flags at the startline although they always see the chequered!
