Fantastic looking car on Rial Split Rims

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/193047.htm

Looks like member Freewheeler's old motor IIRC confused Does anyone know what performance mods were carried out to reach the claimed 580bhp? also 212mph seems a little far fetched IMO! whistle

Probably Techart / Cargraphic engine mods if done by Tech 9, who would verify I am sure.

Mathematically is 580bhp enough for 212mph in a 996?

I would have thought you would need >650-700 to have a shot, 212 is quite a bit above 200mph as it were, just interested smile

Know what you mean CS, though guess the rev limiter has been raised, plus the 19 inch wheels will make a difference?

Does seem a bit high though!

I wonder if the car has actually done this speed or was it calculated using something like this :-

http://www.cartestsoftware.com/cartest2000/index.h...

(which I have nerd)

A 456bhp GT2 gives 191mph but this is with changing the diff to 3.0 from 3.44 confused Calculated using 0.34 drag coeff, 315/30 * 18 tyres, 20.9 sq ft frontal area.

Upping to 580bhp gives 206mph with 19inch wheels and changing the diff ratio to give max mph at max bhp gives 208mph - so not far off smile !

Anyway, how fast was the Mac F1 and that didn't have much more power!

The Ruf RTurbo does 212mph with only 550bhp, so yes it's quite possible.

The more relevent issue is whether the car actually has 580bhp.

Judging by the ad my guess would be Manifolds, Exhaust and ECU Re-Map to tie things together, 520-550bhp would be more realistic IMO, although 212mph seems a tad on the optimistic side.

Maybe Freewheeler can give us a little more info. wink

I suspect if the mod work has been done via Tech 9 the work will have included larger turbos and other bits, and not a simple remap only.

Hi All smile

To get over 205/206 mph....you NEED over 700 hp....so personally I think the day that does 212 mph is the day after the Pope gets married...lol smile

Unless they can prove it of course ???? Timing ticket ???

Thats utter nonsense. A 996GT2 does 196mph as standard with 462bhp. To reach 206mph requires 536bhp using the cube rule, which fits with the proven top speed figures from cars developed by Ruf and RS Tuning etc.

Hi smile

Umm what about aerodynamics ???

You SERIOUSLY think thats 7mph faster than a Carrera GT ?? LOL...

The previous owner is here on this thread...what is his opinion of whether it does 212 mph ??

I still say....day after Pope married.............

With respect you clearly need to do more research about speed, both in theory and in practice. Some theory is here:

http://forum.physorg.com/index.php?showtopic=14909

212mph is only 8.1% faster than a stock GT2 with 462bhp, the Physics rule is that increasing speed requires the cube of power, so to double top speed you need 8x the power. To produce an 8.1% increase in speed (assuming optimal gearing) therefore requires a 26.5% increase in power to 584bhp - spot any linkages here?

CGT is not relevent as it has a very high-downforce design that produces high-drag thus limiting it's top speed. Its cD is 0.4 which is very high

Hi smile

Lol....I have driven cars at OVER 300 mph...one thing I do know about is speed smile

For someone whose car has done 202 mph you seem not to.....with how many hp ???

The CGT is relevant....both in hp and gearing...what makes you think this car has the diff to do 212 ??

All the best Brett smile

ps. that link page is theoretical rubbish....first line starts "Neglecting air resistance and drive train resistance"....yeah right smilesmilesmile

You don't need over 700bhp at all. The Mclaren F1 did 241mph with 636bhp.
The RUF Yellowbird did 211mph with only 470bhp. Friction and aerodynamics are more important.

Also read GuyR's comment.

your statement about needing 700hp to go over 207mph is incorrect. The original CTR did it with around 500hp. A year later the white RS Tuning wide bodied 930 was entered in the Guiness book of records for doing 216.20mph using 580hp -this same engine had been tested by the TUV at 510hp and had a couple of mods for the run...
The specially aerodynamic RS Tuning 993 with sloped windscreen topped out at 221mph using 533hp maximum.
Wasn't the Mclaren capable of 240mph from 6XXhp ?

As far as the CGT - it is the fastest road going car Porsche have ever made and they made sure it sticks to the road at its 207mph maximum-the same engine in a slippier car could doubtlessly beat 212 IMHO smile
