After much thinking I'm either going to go for a new 525 petrol or diesel. My mileage is 15K a year and it would be leased through my company. I don't know which to go for. The petrol is quicker 0-60 and top end but obviously the diesel has more torque... then there are the CO ratings to consider. I want to make a decision today as I'm sick of being so indecisive! Jon

No experience of 5 series but I recently purchased a 320d - my first diesel.
I can honestly say it is brilliant - pulls very strongly when overtaking and I have yet to drop below 50 mpg on the computer.

And despite my weekend driver being a Porsche 993 I always enjoy the 320d.

I've a 530d E39 and love it - wouldn't have a petrol again based on my experience with this... Have you driven them both?

Imagine the CO2 will make the diesel substantially cheaper in tax...

525i m sport 218 bhp 525d 197 bhp, ok so they are the same price approx £33k, but if you want the same bhp you have to go up to the 530d 235 bhp but £37755 nearly £5k more, 525i already has the edge on performance and is £5k cheaper, i have recently gone through this with a 535d or a 530i and i can tell you that the petrol unit is by far sweeter than the desiel and as quick and £5k cheaper fuel is economy is almost identical at 38 mpg, if you want an estate to pull a trailer then get the deisel otherwise the petrol, ENJOY!

Thanks everyone.

Spice,

That was exactly what I was thinking but what about the car tax situation?

At work we have run a 530d and a 530i everyone considers the diesel to be the better car, extra torque more than makes up for lack of Bhp

As new car run under warranty and the way company car is its got to be the diesel

Yes i know your comparing 525's but i'm sure the difference is the same

And this is from the bloke who put his father into a 525i E39 (rather than a 525d) because as a used car the tables are turned (purchase price, possible repairs etc offset by marginal fuel savings doing 10k pa) and hes a slow driver!

I would take a look at the new 525i and 530i emissions and MPG figures on BMWs website... It looks like they have a lower tax liability and the difference in MPG gains could be negligable given the difference in fuel price...

Ok Jonny this is how it is, on new reg deisels (EU4)you no longer pay a 3% premium, a 525 petrol blows 176 , this will be taxed at 22% the 525D blows 165 this will be taxed at 20 %, so you will pay tax on £2k for every £10k the car cost's, either at basic rate or 40% depending on your salary.plus you will taxed on fuel, the PAYE at your office will tell you exactly, but there is almost nothing between the two.
Dont be dragged in by the desiel is better brigade, drive them both if you can, you will find the petrol much sweeter, if 5 MPG is that importat go for the D

Thanks spice,

Yes I do have the griff .. great fun. Had several TVR's over the years, had a griff 500 changed to a Cerby then back to a griff 500 and not regretting it. Just got Gaz golds on and straight through exhaust.

Thanks for the advise.
