Bouley Bay / Val de Terres Hillclimb

Not sure if this is the best place to post on this ?
Has anyone been over to Jersey and Gurnsey to take part/spectate at either or both of these hillclimb events ? I've always wanted to go and I'm able to make the dates this year (18th and 21st July)
Any tips on getting out there, which hotels to stay in/avoid, how best to get from from one island to the other etc?

I generally catch the late August Val Des Terres every year - have done for the past 20 years. TBH that's more of a clubbie event though and it's beter to visit for the British round if you want to see the heavy machinery (July time IIRC).

It's an easy walk from St Peter Port and a nice walk from bottom to top via Fort Grey and the cliffs - good place to watch is from the top - the righthander before the finish - good view of the fastest part of the hill and watch the last of the late brakers....Priaulx was always mighty up there - dunno what he's doing now ;-)

As to hotels - depends on your budget! OGH through to Pandora, but my tip for a reasonable budget, nice place, decent grill room - the Hotel De Havelet - 5 minutes' walk to the top or bottom of the Val Des Terres.

Oh and there are several ferry services to Jersey,or a short hop across by plane - Aurigny, Flybe and another local one I believe

I spectated at the Bouley Bay event back in 1981, as it happily co-incided with a weeks holiday in Jersey.

Great event, although the weather wasn't that great.

I've spectated at both and would say that if I were to compete I'd go for Guernsey out if the two. Jersey suffers from its location, running out of the bay means there is limited space at the "paddock" area and once down there you're pretty much stuck until the event is over.

Gurnsey seems better organised and the paddock is right on the edge of town (3-4 mins walk max.) It is also within sight of the ferry terminal and a shorter sea crossing.

As said above there are many good viewpoints on the route, one worth getting to is the first right hander where you can see down to the start and then watch as the cars pass less than 20ft from you between the high stone wall and grassy bank.

jersey is a lot less spectator-friendly
