Sat Nav Installation-any recommendations ?
Discussion
Took the plunge last week (with the assistance and advice from a number on this forum) and am now the proud owner of a red VXR 6.0 with Wortec performance pack. Lovely !!
I am so happy with the car I figure I will have it for a few years, so I may as well get the sat nav installed at the start.
The question if anyone can help ..... as the standard CD header / changer is pretty basic I am thinking of either installing a fully integrated header with sat nav, to replace the existing system or, if cost prohibits I may go for a separate sat nav alone but try to integrate it more neatly than a suction mount on the screen. (I have a mio 269+ currently). Speed camera data base would be a nice to have.
Has anyone had any experience of either install ? Any recommendations ?
Kenwood seem to do an all singing all dancing sat nav / DVD / CD / blue tooth integrated bit of kit, but I have not checked if it will even fit yet. About £780 + install. An extra £100 for the bluetooth car adaptor, so it all starts getting expensive.
I am a techno idiot, so if there any gurus out there that can recommend a best option that will fit a Monaro I would be very grateful for advice.

Got the Kenwood Double Din 8027 with the Kenwood/Garmin KNA-G520 Sat nav unit (Flash card update). Stereo, nice - could do with better speakers.
The sat nav, well, it's well hidden and easy to access to update. It's display maps/memu's are nice and big and pretty on the HU's 6.5" screen and is all touch screen so easy to operate from the driving position. Loads of options on it and very easy to use.
However, the voice prompting (also has text-to-speech so it has fun trying to pronounce Welsh roads etc!) is not very loud and if you're listening to music, it almost comes out as loud as a whisper (perhaps hearing loss is on it's way). Has a slight 'lag' ie is almost accurate to about 20-25 feet which when you're approaching a turning can mean overshooting it! Not clever.
Fitted with a TMC traffic receiver, it will give you real time info on the map screen of traffic jams and road works. Mine also has a speed camera database on it which is updated every month or so I don't need to have a Road Angel or the such like stuck to the windscreen.
When Kenwood used the DVD sat based system, which I previously had, it was great, but considering this is all 'solid state' technology, it almost seems a step backwards.
On the whole, not bad. Perhaps 7/10 is my score on this unit, but I don't live with it every day so perhaps I'm being a bit harsh. Just hope it doesn't get me lost on the way to Donnington!
Hope the above helps

Actually any installation tips and pictures of double din screens in a Ro' would be most useful.
I currently have the Kenwood DDX-7029 and the Kenwood KNA-G520 sat nav system, the system is superb, the best I've used or seen.
So how tricky is it to install a double din unit in a 6.0L VXR? What is involved? With my current car you have to literally take the whole dash out to install a headunit, its a nightmare!
I know you need the Metra facia from the GTO to fill out the gaps around the aftermarket double din.
I am also assuming that an ISO lead is required to fit aftermarket headunits?
Also is it pretty straight forward running cables down the sides of the interior from the headunit/engine bay to install the likes of the sat nav unit and extra speakers if required? Are the cables easily hidden?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Greg,
Have a look in the FAQ as I recently added quite a bit on fitting new stereos. Basically though the car comes to bits pretty easily (lots of diagrams in the FAQ). I've not done anything through the firewall, but I'm guessing there is a grommet there somewhere, but for changing the speakers and running new wires in the car it isn't too bad.....
