AFT220 or equiv
Discussion
I recently changed my gearbox oil. I went to my local TVR dealer(Racing Green)and asked for ATF 220 and they said that I need SHC ATF(DEX II) TVR part number TVR X0014 for my T5 box. They kindly pumped off the required amount from a 25 litre drum and charged me £24.28. This did seem a bit expensive but I think it's synthetic. Hope this helps

Oh yes, just changed mine over and its definitely a sweeter shift
Opie oils sell it cheaper than anyone else with next day delivery as well
Matt
Plus I believe they're offering a discount for pre-orders to be collected at the Griff Growl. I think ... Maybe ...Opie oils sell it cheaper than anyone else with next day delivery as well

We will speak to them prior to the Growl and suggest they bring some other suitable products to sell over the weekend, assuming they have the space.

If its for the gearbox, use Castrol Synthrax 75W-90 the ATF is poor gearbox oil
Matt
hi guys i dont want to be the bearer of bad new but when i was a wee lad training to be a rover fitter i was told to only put atf in the rover box due to the pump being made up of nylon iirc and it cant take the viscosity of gear oil and stalls thus not lubing the gears in the box which means a new box in no time i have seen the insides of a gearbox run on "thin" gear oil it burns out if left to long and then becomes unecconomical to repair Matt
this is only my experience and if opie oils are recommending this oil then i will bow down to their knowledge because additives change and they pay liability insurance

ATF is about as thin as it gets? so I cannot quite follow the logic in the above post. The wedges used the same basic LT77 box from the early 1980's on. The original recommended oil was hypoy light (sae 80 gear oil), then tvr recommended ATF. Chris Crane at RPI advocates Castrol SMX after his experience over the years seeing many premature failures when run on ATF. The technical services department at Castrol recommend SMX for the LT177, I very much doubt that they will be wrong? When I put SMX in my old wedge the gear change hot and cold was better and the box appeared not to weep as much oil.

like i said this is only my experience of building these boxes over 10 yrs never once had to rebuild a box ruining on atf just because of the oil it is using it is 10yrs since i worked on these boxes and as i said the additives have changed and there is more choice in the oils we can choose but every box that i have seen striped that had been filled with gear oil the pump had failed due to the high viscosity when cold and due to this and the design of the box the oil didnt get to all the necessary parts ant

The viscosity of the ATF and the Castrol is surprisingly close, they both pour like milk
The castrol however has a far higher film strength, I ran my old wedge on the castrol for 60K miles with no issues
Matt
if the castrol oil is thin in viscosity then it would be a good choice imho due to the fact that the pump in the box will be able to cope with it. the higher film strength will be an added extra bonus. Dextron III is PAS fluid. Available at most motor factors inc Halfords.
No its not, it can be used in the PAS but its an high quality Auto trans fluid(no offense Shpub
) used in many modern Japanese gearboxes, auto trans fluid as a viscosity of about 20/30 (they vary) weight oil so you can see why it appears very viscous.Edited by That Daddy on Friday 6th July 14:07
