Being new to 996 GT3 ownership I was slightly worried when I started the car and took it out of the garage to clean only to see a reasonable amount of smoke, both times it happened the car had only been started previously and idled for a few mins, not driven.Doesnt happen when the car has been driven, before starting up again.Any ideas (no expensive replies please!)

Basically because its the boxer engine.
Horizontal piston bores so there is always an element of oil in the bores which may not have been burnt off when the engine had been run.
Not a problem unless it blows blue smoke constantly

Phew, was just about to sell some organs on ebay, come to think of it my 964 turbo used to do it,occasionally.GT3 doesnt do it all the time. By the way had a blast with a 993 RS and Ferrari F40 this evening, down some country lanes, you could hear the F40 exhaust above our 2 911s and see the flames when he changed gear......

I've only ever had this twice on my turbo and not yet at all on my GT2, I think both times on the turbo happened when I'd just started it up to move it then started it again.

I reckon generally if you start the thing, drive it on a decent trip before shutting it down it won't do this.

Be nice to know the mechanics behind the short run/journey differences, assuming it's no coincidence.

But like others have said, it's nothing to worry about anyhow.

Thats pretty normal for a very short start stop. My 3 used to do it but I started to make a point of not running it for short durations because you will eventually destroy the CAT.

They all do it - from 356s to Boxster/Cayman/997s.
