Surging,rattle,gone!

Strange one yesterday,drive about one mile and my tuscan feels like the gas is stuck on,dip clutch and it wants to idle at approx 1400 revs.Not going fast at this stage and trying to control it theres an occasional pinging/rattle,not much.The time scale of all this action is all in a matter of approx 20 seconds so i shut down and coast to a halt.checked the throttle pedal seems ok and then restart about a minute later and drive back home,with no problem.After looking around the engine bay nothing untoward i take it out for a 14 mile spin,and guess what,no problem.The usual thing you think is shims but the engine seems fine and why the raised revs,the other theory is that shutting the engine down reset the ECU and all's ok.

I would not rule out a fraying throttle cable. As the strands break they tend to bind in the outer sheath. A quick inspection around the throttle bodies and in the drivers foot well should confirm whether this could be the cause. I have to say that it does not usually go away so easily, it often ends abruptly in a snapped cable.

Same thing happened to me last year. Mine is a 2004 S, so I guess it is a similar build to yours. I am fairly sure the throttle cable fraying/breaking issue was resolved by then.

My problem was sorted out by the guys at Autocraft in Salisbury. They took apart the throttle linkage under the air intake and reassembled it with an additional washer or two. Turns out the original assembly was prone to slipping out of its seating because of the size of the washers. So everything would be fine and suddenly, it wouldn't idle at less than 2,500 rpm. Scary!

By the way, I phoned Racing Green when it happened for advice and they said that a common issue, if you have been giving it some welly, is that one of the brackets holidng the cable becomes bent - you can sort it out with a couple of blows with a hammer! I guessed that the intermittent nature of the problem made this unlikely.

Mine has been perfect since, by the way.

i forgot to mention that i had just removed and replaced the airbox to replace the oil pressure switch,perhaps i might have snagged something but i can't see what.
