996 GT2 MK1 vs GT MK2
Discussion
hi, i have a 996 TT which i love and adore. a good friend of mine unfortunatley got me into track days about 3 years ago and i dont enjoy seeing his 997 gt3 from the back - i rather like to see it in disappaer in my rear view mirror. but i am a big fan of the turbo engine and thereofore like to get a gt2. thus i am thinking of getting a 996 GT2 MK2 and would appreciate to hear your views or experiences on the differences between the MK1 and Mk2 and if there is anything in particular i should be looking out for. tips on avaiable options at the time (if there were any) would also be very helpful. many thanks. alex
Very few differences between mk1 and mk2, from memory:
Mk2 had - better geo, 20ish more bhp, GT3 style wheels, carbon spoiler, carbon wings mirrors. Can't think of anything else.
There are very very few mk2's in the UK. I wouldn't worry about trying ot find a mk2, just find the best car you can. The geo can be sorted by JZ or Parr.

Very little difference really, have a look on this thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
Check out Mark's Basalt Black MKII in the classifieds
If I hadn't of bought the car I have this would definately have been my next choice - if you really need a MKII that is.

I had a good look at the MK1s and 2s but as CableGuy said there are fewer MK2s available + they tend to go for more
My Mk1 has had a PARR /Cargraphic Exhaust/Filter/Billet valves and an ECU upgrade together with MK2 wheels which really makes the car look that liitle bit better
As I said before be careful buying one of these things as they are dangerous ( more so than a GT3 ) + you will need some track time at Bedford with an Instructor on how to drive the beast - a Porsche Turbo is a more safer choice than a GT2
Ive done 8,000 in the GT2 since March this year and I think it is a very special car - not many cars on the road will even get near the thing

timmo, how much weight loss and power gain is there to be had from the changes you made? agree, bedford is a nice track on which to learn more about the car's characteristics..but may not have time to go there before the ring which i am due to go to end of july!

Tim, could you spare a minute to elaborate on this? The "safety" aspects of owning and running a GT2 is something that makes me think twice about ownership (fantasy though that may be this year!). Be very interested to hear back from you, perhap in comparison to another fast car?timmo said:

Timmo, will be interesting to compare your RS against my 2 at the next track venue.. we'll have to swap seats as well!My Mk1 has had a PARR /Cargraphic Exhaust/Filter/Billet valves and an ECU upgrade together with MK2 wheels which really makes the car look that liitle bit better

Ive been tracking a GT3 RS for 4 years now and have had another GT3 RS as a road car
I have done 35,000 in one and 14,000 in the other
In between Ive owned a 996 Turbo and a 997 C2S
The GT2 is an altogether different animal and had I come straight from a normal C2 or C4 or even a 996 Turbo with all the PSM,TCM on the car I would think twice
try driving a Carrera 2 with the traction off all the time and Imagine another 200+ BHP in the rear !
when the car starts to go sideways you need to know what to do and the experience of owing the GT3 have helped with this
Would you go out and buy a new GSR 1000 motorbike and think you can ride it ?
Its now pushing out 550 BHP with a good PARR road set up and its one awesome car to drive
As I said - go to Bedford get Instruction fronm someone who has raced 911s ( not some front engined car )
Anyone who tells you any different is talking bo**ox !

I remember the good ol' days of no traction control. Now Im back there again..
I just bought a GT2. Completely fell in love with it: like riding a top grand prix dressage horse, so light and sensitive and powerful, you are almost dancing across the surface...its all about feel.
I test drove the Porsche Turbo, it was nice, but the GT2 gave me the bigger smile.
xx
