Derelict property...
Discussion
Seen 2 properties near me that are boarded up, etc... how does one go about finding out who owns them to put offers in as they could be quite good money spinners?
one is a 4/5 bed victorian terrace house and the other is a 2 floor flat above a shop, but the door to the property is boarded up.
Any advice or is it a case of spending the £4 (or whatever it is now) contact housing association and going off the last owner off that?
If it what happens if I can't find them/get in contact with them to offer a price?

Some local councils often have a register of empty/derelict homes and sometimes an Empty Homes Officer (probably not the correct title !)
They often will be in touch with the owner to try and get the property back into use somehow, especially if the property is old and has some architectural value.
Whenever I have approached them they are very helpful and in some cases will forward on your details to the owners.

I called the Council about one that backed onto the garden of my new house. Been empty for 15 years apparently, owned by some weirdo who lives just 30 miles away, but the only occasions he visits is at 3.00 in the morning! I discussed it with the locals, who, although had nagged the Council a bit, didn't go too far in case the Council adopted it and moved a family of Lithuanian refugees into it! Ha Ha! Council chap I spoke with was very helpful (though I am persuasive!) and agreed to let the owner know I was interested in buying it. A month later it was on the market (overpriced for such a wreck). I've clearly rambled off the point a bit here - call the Council!
