GP2 terrible crash

Anyone else watching the GP2 race on Eurosports
Awful crash as the pack slowed for the safety car on the opening lap, Esto Viso, hit the back of a slowing car which launched him over the concrete wall
It was almost a mirror copy of Marco Campos fatal crash in the 90's.

Ernesto Viso emerged from a huge GP2 accident at Magny-Cours "stable and conscious" after a terrifying crash on the first lap of the race. Viso ran over the back of Michael Ammermuller's car and the Racing Engineering flew and landed upside-down on the barriers.
The wreck narrowly missed two marshals and hit a fire extinguisher before landing on the wrong side of the barriers and sliding into an advertising hoarding. The chassis broke just in front of the driver but the two pieces did not separate and this meant that the driver escaped any serious injury. He was reported to be "conscious and stable" and was taken off to the Hopital PIerre Beregovoy in Nevers for checks.
Prior to the Viso-Ammermuller accident the two front row drivers - iSport team-mates Timo Glock and Andreas Zuber collided as they came off the grid and Zuber's car bounced over Glock's and the BMW test driver was taken off to the medical centre but is also uninjured.

Another miraculous escape - that could of been so much worse
Lucky guy - and the marshals !

Amazing that he's ok, after Kubica's shunt a couple of weeks ago it goes to prove that all the research into making single seaters safer has worked.

GP2 Series leader Timo Glock has said both he and iSport teammate Andi Zuber "need to be clever" at the first corner of tomorrow's race at Magny-Cours if he is to consolidate his championship lead.
Glock holds a comfortable advantage at the head of the standings, with Zuber down in tenth after a series of gearbox problems have ruined his last few races.
Glock will start from pole tomorrow, with Zuber alongside, but the German pointed to Magny-Cours' tricky first corner, which funnels the cars through a left-hander before the long, right-hand sweep of Estoril corner.
"I have to think about the championship, but I also want to win," said Glock. "We have to be clever at the first corner.
We have to watch out for Bruno [Senna, who qualified third] because he'll want to get between us at the very least. But Andi is still the man to beat, and it's good that we're pushing each other on."
Second placed Zuber said: "I'm very confident about the start and the race tomorrow. I was expecting pole today, but Timo was quicker than me."
Senna, meanwhile, hopes the weather might upset the form book: "If it rains tomorrow, like they say, then I think I will be able to challenge them more."

Looking at the footage, no amount of increased safety would have saved him had the car landed a few inches further away from the track than it did other than an enclosed cockpit, so Id say it was 99% good fortune on this occasion.
The initial phase of the crash going up the back of someone yep, very similar, although in Kubica's case they were running at racing speeds so Im not sure the safety car was really a major factor other than to allow Kubica to be close up behind Trulli after the restart, but that could happen at any time.
christ - he is so lucky - that's cm's away from his head
The accident was caused because the packed had slowed for the Safety Car boards had come out about 10-15 secs before but Viso obviously didn't see the boards and was at full pace
The onboard yellow light warning system that's used in Champ Car and the Indy series would make sense to be implemented in F1 and GP2 - in fact any race series would benefit from it

They do have it in F1 now, steering wheel lights to indicate a yellow flag etc (and presumably a safety car)LocoBlade said:

Jesus that's nasty, Ernesto was one of my favourite drivers from the days when I was involved in F3, he was always chatty and cheerful and always spoke whenever I saw him afterwards. Fingers crossed he's OK, he's one of the nice guys.
On a slightly lighter note - the end of the clip indicates why one should never sit down in a pit lane!

I'm still concerned that the chassis broke at the front of the car. Look at the car when it comes to a rest at the end of the video and the whole nose of the car is at about a 30 degree angle to the rest of it. He was going fast yes but there was not a massive single impact like Kubica. Are GP2 cars significantly weaker than F1 cars?
