Carpet usually held in place with a lump of velcro...give a tug and it should come free with a bit of 'boxing' thats used to stop passengers big feet damaging ECU

Got it! not found what I was hoping but it's there. I assume one of the two leads with nothing plugged in is the one I connect the laptop to.

Open up the ECU box and the 9 pin serial port is inside...

Yes, I think so.

Right I got inside the box and there's no 9 pin connector. There are two plugs on about 100mm of wire coming out of the harness in the top of the ecu. One's a two pin, the other a three pin. Is it one of these.

I've took a picture but can't suss out how to get it on here!

I've just looking through numerous previous topics and I've found:

  • It's the 3 pin cable
  • It's the same plug as the back lights
  • the cables connect 1-1, 2-2 & 3-3
Has anyone yet found a suppler for the plug rather than cutting the one off the lights & which end of the 3 pin plug coming out of the ecu is pin1?

I've seen a link to a ready made cable but at £40 I'll try to make one first.

Any help appreciated

Just noticed your profile - 4.2 expert/owner needed - mines 4.5 so cannot help further.

Hum, that's different. My 97 4.2 has a silver box ECU

You can see where the previous owner trimmed the lid to leave the serial cable permenently connected
