Hi all,
Am moving from a TVR to a GT3… must say given the situation with TVR not a tough choice. Re the topic I have just spent the last hour looking at forums regarding the Porsche warranty. What is the general view on the warranty from Paragon? Looks like they offer much the same as a manufacturer warranty, question is will they honour it? Any opinion welcome.

When I bought a car through Paragon, the car developed a gearbox leak and the company paid out in full. The warranty is sourced through an independant provider so when you make a claim you are not dealing with Paragon as such. The fix was done at my local OPC. although, paragon were very supportive through the process.

I guess like any warranty though, the devil is in the detail!

I got mine from Paragon and haven't had to use the warranty but reading through the small print it looked pretty good.

Thanks for the help. As you say it's all in the detail.

Here is my experience of the warranty provided by Paragon :

I bought a 996 from Paragon in 2004 and had to make a warranty claim in the first year. As there's an OPC a lot nearer to where I live than Paragon I got the work done (ABS sensor failure) at the OPC. Getting the warranty company and the OPC to deal with each other was a real pain and it was several weeks before the warranty company reimbursed the expense. That said, had the work been done by Paragon themselves I imagine the process would have been much smoother.

I renewed the warranty in 2005 but decided against it in 2006 because it had a limit of £5000, which I imagine would cover most possible problems but would not cover an engine failure. And it's no cheaper than an official Porsche warranty.

So if you plan on taking the car to Paragon for any warranty work that might arise, and you're happy with the cover limit, I'm sure it is okay, but if you have details of the official Porsche warranty it may be worth doing a careful comparison before deciding.

I wouldn't risk it personally but Paragon seem like a tidy outfit with some racing heritage.

OPC warranty every time for me. Cover is limited to cost of car not £5k and it's £895 a year. Seems good value to me. But I have a low appetitie for risk.

Even if Paragon are 100% straight (and I have met them and they seem like good people) then remember that it's not them who decide whether to pay out. It's an insurance company. The rest writes itself...........

I recently bought a GT3 from Paragon and had exactly this issue. I ended up going down the route of getting a OPC warranty as a condition of sale and paid for it myself, getting a £500 deduction for not taking Paragon's warranty. After a little intial push back they were happy to go down this route and sorted the minor items which the OPC (Tonbridge) brought up on the car. Think it really comes down to choice. I took the view that the engine/gearbox on the car costs a lot and I was happier to have a OPC warranty rather than an independent policy with a relatively small claim limit (£5000 if I remember correctly). In due course I may end up having shelled out for nothing but the peace of mind is what I was after.

The car has just arrived back from a 5,000 km trip around Scandinavia on the Furball and Le Mans before that and hasn't missed a beat. Think Paragon are a good outfit and would buy from them again, just felt more comrotable with the OPC product. PM me if you want more details

Thanks for the help.
As you say, you pay your money and take your choice. One of the reasons I decided to move away from the TVR was unreliability and the fear that the S 6 engine could go pop at any time. What I don’t want is to be listening to every strange noise coming from the engine or gearbox thinking is this a £5k bill?
On the other hand given the “bullet proof” expectations of a Porsche (over a TVR) am I going to be hit with a claim for £5k+? Possible but not probable.
Regarding the use of a warranty company my expectations are that if the claim is borderline I will have a fight on regardless of who has the warranty.
Will talk this over with Paragon.........
Again thanks for the help and the positive experiences of Paragon

Even a basic engine from Porsche for a boggo 996 Carrera is £12k. They tend to just replace them if they go if you have the warranty.

Gearboxes are about £7k I think, plus with labour at £110 an hour.......

I'd buy from Paragon for sure, but I'g get the money off and do the 111 pointer and the OPC warranty route though. Paragon I trust, but third party warranty companies? No chance.

Thanks for all the input. GT3 is now in my garage after a very wet and cautious 250 mile drive back from Paragon. I now have a car for the price I wanted to pay, in the spec I wanted and in my opinion a great colour.
Managed to get one dry day yesterday for a serious examination of handling and performance and I must say on first impressions all is good.
On the warranty front I took the car to the local OPC for the 111 point check and it came through with no issues. The young service guy told me it’s probably one of the better examples he has seen, then again he probably tells all the punters that. I even managed to spend a little time with the mechanic looking under the car, not sure what I was looking for but all seemed OK to him.
So my decision is to accept the Paragon warranty in the car price and trust that German engineering will not fail me. Next year (if I am still happy with the car) I will go with the OPC warranty rather than extend the one on the car.
Lets hope for fine weather and great fault free driving. See you on the track….

If you have gone through the 111 pt check, I personally think you're mad (in the nicest possible way) for not purchasing the OPC warranty.

I assume you treated the 111 point check as a pdi. I'd have still gone for the Porsche warranty though.

More info and pics of the car please.

I wanted the conformation that an independent view gives. If an OPC with an interest in selling me a warranty and putting right minor defaults (at labour costs) gives it the thumbs up then that’s good enough for me. Only negative is I will need to buy the 111 point check again in 12 months. Until then I am up £500 with a Paragon warranty. …. unless something goes horribly wrong to the tune of over £5k I should be OK.

Re you comment “mad” without a doubt. Life is too short to think otherwise.

good luck with the car but just be aware of the cost of the GT3 engine if it did go (hopefully veru unlikely!); considerably more than a carrera engine and certainly the 5K limit with the non OPC warranty wouldn't get you very far.

I have the opc warranty on my gt3, cant recommend it enough. Hatfield opc noticed a "slight coolant leak from head gasket" on last service. I informed them this must be a warranty item, yes sir was the reply. Car now at garage. They then noted that a coolant housing connector was also leaking ( easy to see with engine on the floor) so new housing also sitting on bench to be fitted. I went to see car on the ramps with no resistance from dealer. As said they have been rather good, not great on keeping the customer (me) informed on what is happening with car. i.e a weeks wait for the housing to be sent from porsche motorsport. But atleast they spotted it and are dealing with it. I have now just renewed warranty, while car on their ramps. It really is a no brainer! Oh and of course i have a loan car. Just can't complain.

sarg3 I agree. Its not just the cover-its the service too. If you breakdown they give you Merc (or other "prestige" car) delivered to your office in an hour or 2! The breakdown service is all over Europe too. Worth every single penny.

to clarify (as I am in exactly the same position as JLF - even down to the TVR that's going to a new owner), what are the limits on the OPC warranty compared to the Paragon one?

I was there yesterday and test drove the silver GT3. Did you buy the yellow one that they had?

Nice bunch of chaps.
