When I drive fast/hard round a sharp right hand bend, or going round something like a big roundabout fast, I get a horrible rough grating noise from the rear near side(passenger), sounds like the wheel is loose. It only happens when driving it fast(ish)
Had the car up on the jacks, wheel off and checked everything and it appears OK. No play if I grab and rock the top and bottom of the wheel, and no play when rocking left and tight.
If I rotate the wheel there is about 1/2" play either side of an imaginary vertical line nefore the diff engages, not sure if that is normal or not.
Any one any ideas what it can be??

alan might sound dumb but is the tyre catching the inner wheel arch under severe corning/load not sure if you have upgraded bigger wheels but if all the other things you have checked are ok i can,t really think of anything else it could be offhand. btw the play in the diff is normal

Could be the exhaust moving about - does occasionally on mine.

Thanks for your ideas, It's not the tyre catching, I've checked that, and I'm pretty sure its not the exhaust, its a noise that seems to increase with wheel rotation speed - if that makes sense - I'm confused.

what about the rear brakes? not the same car i know but in my mates seat leon after a few laps around knockhill or even spirted driving round know, theres a a noise very similar coming from his right rear brake.iirc it was a part of the disk catching on the a part of the caliper while it was hot.i thought it was something serious as if there wheel was about to fall off when i first heard it!

Check your diff.

If it's loose the inner CV joint housings can run on parts of the chassis..... frown

Mine used to do this every time, made a horrendous noise, it was the exhaust rubbing just where it drops down from the engine and then goes down the side of the gearbox, took it to TorqueRVT where Ian got a big bar and bent it slightly away from the chassis - job done.

I had this on left hand bends - mine was also the exhaust catching the gearbox. It sounded & felt like I was driving on the edge of an alloy. Fixed by bending the exhaust

I had a very similar thing on left handers. Turned out to be that the engine had moved and was sitting squiffy so the exhaust manifold on one side was just skimming the body and creating the noise.
Was fixed by a quick engine out and reseat.

Update - Took the car up to Middlewich to get my Geometery done by Derek at Absolutely Shocks. While I was there Ian from Torque RVT (who are next door) kindly came round and gve it a quick check whilst it was on the ramp. The grating noise was caused by the Anti Roll bar mounting bolt which had become loose and was catching on the rear n/s spring. He also tightened up the diff mounting bolts and 'fettled' the rear silencer so it now sits nice and straight. Top Man, thanks Ian.
Seeting up the Geometery took about 2 hours and has made a big improvement to the car. Handles better, better traction and rock steady at high speeds. Watching all the adjustments being made makes you realise the importance of getting these cars set up correctly by someone who knows what they are doing.

mine did the exact same thing, but it was a squeak, not a grating sound
