Hey guys

Looking to put a motorbike engine in a 7 replica because of weight and well lets face it THE NOIZE!!!! Im just looking for some information from anyone who has done this.

Where do I obtain a reverse box from and can someone confirm my understanding of one. From what iv been told it is a small gearbox which bolts onto the sequential unit on the fire blade engine and when engaged with a separate leaver I get reverse – correct?

How much are one of these little gadgets going to cost as I haven’t set my engine budget yet

Are there certain boxes for certain engines or are they universal

Generally a reverse box in a BEC goes roughly in the middle of the prop shaft. You'll need to get a new prop fabricated so not marque specific. Cons include the fact that most of them seem to be effective at lubricating the inside of your transmission tunnel and they cause quite a lot of vibration. Bolts also often work loose so they require constant checking.

An alternative is getting a diff with an integral reverse like the Muffett. More expensive but avoids the vibration and allows different ratios as a bonus.

Or an electric reverse.

I was lucky with my mechanical reverse box as I got no vibration at all from it, even max RPM in 6th gear. Did blow a little oil from the breather, I just made the tube longer and that semed to cure it. My box was called an FR2000 but not sure if they are still available???? Quaife do one as does Westfield, but heard mixed reports on the Westie one. Electric is great if it is installed properly and you can rely on it to actually work, and can save about 10kgs (factor in a cente-bearing on the prop if using electric). Still sounds like a milkfloat though!

How much do you really need reverse?

In 3 years of ownership i have learned to drive around it and its little hardship to get out and push.

My electric reverse died about 10 months ago and I have coped fine without it. Just need to think ahead a little about where you're going.

Getting it rebuilt for my Warrant of Fitness as it was certified with the reverse.

Make life simple and don't fit a reverse. I've not found a need for one yet ...
